Savannah Chrisley defended Donald Trump during a heated The View discussion on Feb. 19, 2026, while Sunny Hostin called him racist and Whoopi Goldberg cited past actions and controversies. The argument was a clash over what evidence should inform that judgment—not a settled finding about Trump’s character.
What happened on The View?
Chrisley was guest-hosting while regular co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin was on maternity leave. She had begun filling in on Feb. 17; the sharper exchange over Trump and racism came two days later.
Chrisley said she understood why people were upset with Trump’s actions but found it difficult to hear him described as racist. She referred to a Black friend whom she said Trump had helped. Hostin rejected the idea that having a Black friend answered the question, saying, “He is a racist.” Goldberg then offered examples she said helped explain why others viewed Trump differently.
The discussion also touched on a controversial social-media video. Chrisley criticized the White House’s handling of it but maintained that a staffer had posted it. A White House explanation described an unnamed staffer as having mistakenly posted the image; the available accounts do not independently resolve who controlled the account.

What arguments did Chrisley make?
Personal experience
Chrisley’s central response was personal: she said Trump had helped a Black friend, which made the description of him as racist difficult for her to accept. That was her account of an individual relationship, not independent evidence establishing or disproving a broader characterization.
HBCU funding and the social-media controversy
Chrisley also pointed to funding for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) under Trump’s administration. She did not offer a figure in the reported exchange, and the recaps do not supply enough primary-source context to establish one here. She separately criticized the White House’s handling of the video while saying a staffer had posted it.

What examples did Hostin and Goldberg cite?
Hostin challenged Chrisley’s personal example as an answer to the racism question. Goldberg cited several matters as reasons people disagreed with Chrisley’s defense:
- Trump administration executive actions targeting diversity, equity and inclusion programs;
- a post about Barack and Michelle Obama;
- Trump’s pursuit of the death penalty for the Central Park Five after their exoneration; and
- a 1970s housing discrimination case.
These references do not all have the same legal status. Goldberg raised them as part of a televised political argument; the recap is not a full record of the underlying proceedings or evidence, and does not independently verify every claim.

Why did the exchange become contentious?
The two sides relied on different kinds of evidence. Chrisley emphasized personal testimony and HBCU funding; Hostin and Goldberg pointed to public actions, statements and historical legal allegations. Personal experience may explain why Chrisley reached her view, while the co-hosts’ examples directed attention to conduct and public record. Neither the exchange nor the recaps establish a definitive answer to the question of Trump’s character.

In a later appearance on The View’s Behind the Table podcast, Chrisley said she had misjudged some of the co-hosts and described efforts to talk through tension with Hostin. That reflection came after the Feb. 19 argument; it does not change what each participant argued during the segment.
