“Too much” and “not enough” makeup are opinions, not objective categories. A more useful comparison looks at coverage, color, finish, and occasion—and keeps a single appearance separate from a person’s everyday routine. The examples below show how celebrity makeup can range from a reported makeup-free red carpet to polished, artist-created glam. They do not establish that anyone wears too much or too little, or that a photograph is unstyled or unretouched.
Why this is not a reliable “10 and 10” ranking
The available, attributable examples do not support a roster of ten celebrities who supposedly wear too much makeup and ten who supposedly wear too little. Making that list would turn personal taste into a claim about people’s habits. Instead, these documented appearances and interviews show what the labels can obscure: makeup varies by occasion, and a minimal look is not necessarily barefaced.
There is a further complication with “no makeup” imagery. A peer-reviewed analysis argues that celebrity barefaced images can still preserve familiar beauty standards, while leaving styling, lighting, and other interventions ambiguous. The label should describe what a source reports about a particular appearance—not be treated as proof of an unretouched image or someone’s normal routine. Read the analysis.
What the documented celebrity looks show
Pamela Anderson: reported makeup-free at the 2023 Fashion Awards
British Vogue reported that Anderson wore no makeup to the 2023 Fashion Awards. She described the period as one of self-acceptance: “I think it’s a self-acceptance time of my life; just peeling back the layers – it’s almost like a fresh slate.” British Vogue’s account covers the appearance and her comments about skincare.

Marie Claire also reported that Anderson felt more comfortable in her own skin and wanted to challenge an industry focused on beauty. “I am much more comfortable in my own skin, but I also am in an industry that really focuses on beauty. And I thought, ‘I’m going to challenge beauty.’” Marie Claire’s report gives that context. This is evidence about one public appearance and her stated motivation, not evidence that she generally avoids makeup.
Zendaya: minimal, sun-kissed makeup at a 2026 premiere
For the New York premiere of The Odyssey in July 2026, makeup artist Ernesto Casillas described a minimal look with no eye makeup, sheer foundation, blush, and gloss. “We wanted the interpretation of this to be beautiful skin—sunkissed, like she’d flown too close to the sun—and very, very minimal makeup.” Harper’s Bazaar’s look breakdown reports the technique, including light layers of blush.

That is not the same as a barefaced appearance. It is a deliberately created finish, with selected products and color. Casillas has also described a hybrid approach: “It is more toned-down face makeup with a lightweight foundation, sunkissed skin, and a pop of color around the eyes.” Allure’s July 2026 interview presents minimal and maximal makeup as points on a spectrum rather than mutually exclusive styles.
Scarlett Johansson: everyday makeup versus work makeup
Johansson has described her everyday look as minimal and clean: “My look is very minimal and clean.” Marie Claire reports that she does not wear full-coverage foundation day to day, while her professional work can involve full foundation and other makeup. Marie Claire’s interview illustrates why a red-carpet or work appearance should not be used to declare what someone wears in daily life.

How to compare makeup without judging a face
When describing a look, focus on observable choices and the setting. A full-coverage base or dramatic eye can be intentional event styling; sheer coverage can still involve several products. Useful distinctions include:
- Coverage: sheer, light, or full foundation.
- Color: subtle warmth or blush versus stronger, more saturated color.
- Emphasis: eyes, lips, complexion, or a combination.
- Finish: matte, dewy, or a mix.
- Occasion and attribution: everyday routine, editorial image, or red carpet—and whether the description comes from the celebrity, a makeup artist, or a report.
These descriptions let readers express taste without treating someone’s age, skin, or grooming as a flaw. They also keep a photo-specific observation from becoming an unsupported claim about a celebrity’s habits.

What “no-makeup makeup” can look like
Zendaya’s premiere look offers a concrete example of a minimal, sun-kissed effect that is not literally makeup-free: light foundation, carefully placed blush, and gloss, with no eye makeup reported for that appearance. Harper’s Bazaar says Casillas used Prada Beauty Touch Blush in Caffe and Cherry and relied on light layers for the natural effect. See the technique and product details. A useful starting point is to apply complexion coverage sparingly, then build warmth or blush in light layers where desired. Keep the emphasis selective—such as skin and cheeks rather than a defined eye—and adjust the finish and intensity to personal preference. The reported celebrity look is inspiration, not a universal standard or a claim that the result will look identical on every person.
