On October 30, 2024, Alyssa Farah Griffin said Joe Biden should stay off media until Election Day after his remark about “garbage” during a fundraising call drew criticism. Her concern was that the comment could undercut Kamala Harris’s message of bringing Americans together. This was Griffin’s campaign-risk assessment in the final days before the November 5 election—not a measured finding about how voters actually responded.
What Biden said about “garbage”
As recounted in Entertainment Weekly’s report republished by AOL on October 30, 2024, Biden spoke during a Tuesday fundraising call after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a racist joke about Puerto Rico at a Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden.
The report quotes Biden as saying: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and it’s un-American.” The wording prompted controversy because it could be heard as referring to Trump supporters, rather than only to the rhetoric about Latinos.
Why Griffin advised Biden to stay off media
On Wednesday, October 30, Griffin posted: “Biden needs to stay off all media until Election Day. His ‘garbage’ comments are political gold for the Right & remind voters of being called ‘deplorables.’” The report reproduced the post and described Griffin discussing the controversy on The View.

Griffin’s reasoning was about the campaign’s message: she argued that Biden’s remark ran against Harris’s effort to present herself as a unifying candidate. In her view, undecided voters already skeptical of that message might see the comment as evidence that it was insincere. That was Griffin’s prediction, not a reported measurement of voter opinion or a demonstrated effect on the campaign.
How Biden and Harris responded
Biden clarified that he was referring to the rhetoric, not Latinos. The report quotes him: “Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage — which is the only word I can think of to describe it.”

Harris said Biden had clarified his comments and said she disagreed with criticizing people based on whom they vote for. On The View, panelists also debated how the remarks might affect voters and the campaign.
