Celebrity contestants have taken the hot seat on both the U.S. ABC series and British ITV specials of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Here are ten people named in official broadcaster listings—an illustrative selection, not a definitive ranking or complete roster.
Who appeared on the ABC version?
ABC’s season 5 episode listing names these celebrity contestants. The listing verifies their appearances, but does not establish how they performed or what they won.
- Larry David — Listed among the celebrity contestants in ABC’s season 5 episodes. ABC episode listing.
- Ben Affleck — Also named in ABC’s season 5 episode listing. ABC episode listing.
- Jason Alexander — Listed as a season 5 contestant by ABC. ABC episode listing.
- Tig Notaro — Named among ABC’s season 5 contestants. ABC episode listing.
- Lauren Lapkus — ABC’s 2020 announcement said she continued her run on the show for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. ABC episode announcement.
- Anderson Cooper — ABC’s 2020 announcements identify him as a participant playing for the Spikes K9 Fund. ABC episode announcements.
Who appeared in ITV celebrity specials?
ITV’s press-centre listings document these contestants in British celebrity specials. They identify the participants and charitable framing, rather than contest results.
- Stephen Fry — Named in an ITV celebrity-special listing. ITV press-centre listing.
- Jeanette Kwakye — Listed alongside Stephen Fry in an ITV special. ITV press-centre listing.
- Steph McGovern — Named as a contestant in an ITV celebrity special. ITV press-centre listing.
- Dion Dublin — Listed alongside Steph McGovern in an ITV special. ITV press-centre listing.
How celebrity editions work
The show’s celebrity format differs by edition and broadcast period. ABC describes its current format as pairs of celebrities playing together in the hope of winning $1 million for a charity of their choice. ITV’s cited special listings likewise describe celebrity contestants playing for chosen charities. ABC’s June 10, 2024 schedule announcement framed the program’s return as celebrating its 25th anniversary; that description refers to ABC’s return, not the start date of every national version.
