The Terminal List: Dark Wolf is a prequel built around Ben Edwards, Taylor Kitsch’s Navy SEAL-turned-covert-operator, and its strongest reason to watch is the chance to see Kitsch carry the franchise as its central figure. The series has a promising character premise: viewers know the darkness waiting in Edwards’s future, while the story follows the choices that move him toward it. That gives the action an emotional question beyond who wins the next operation.
What is The Terminal List: Dark Wolf about?
Set before The Terminal List, the series follows Ben Edwards as he moves from Navy SEAL service into the CIA’s world of black operations. Prime Video frames it as an espionage thriller concerned with warfare’s darker side and human cost. The Associated Press places the story about five years before the original series and notes that Edwards ultimately becomes a villain in that story. (Prime Video; Associated Press)
That destination changes the usual prequel question. The point is not simply to discover what happens next; it is to watch Edwards become someone the franchise audience already knows he will be. The premise gives Kitsch room to play both the disciplined operator and the man being shaped by the work.
Does Taylor Kitsch get a stronger spotlight?
Yes, in the sense that Edwards is the lead rather than a supporting presence in James Reece’s story. Kitsch’s challenge is to make that centrality feel earned: the character needs to be more than a capable fighter or a bridge to the original show. The series’ origin-story framework puts his performance at the center of the moral and emotional turn.

Kitsch has described the role in terms of that tension. “I take the utmost pride to be authentic and rooted in Ben,” he told the Associated Press, “but there’s a dark side to service.” That idea is a useful lens for the series: the action matters most when it reveals what the work costs Edwards, rather than treating combat as spectacle alone. (Associated Press)
How does the prequel fit the franchise?
Dark Wolf expands the television version of The Terminal List, which is based on novels by former Navy SEAL Jack Carr. Carr and David DiGilio are co-creators of the series, and Chris Pratt returns as James Reece. Amazon describes the show as Edwards’s origin story, charting his path toward CIA Special Operations. The cited information establishes a franchise connection, not that Dark Wolf adapts a particular Carr novel. (Amazon; Associated Press)

Where The Terminal List centers Reece, this prequel shifts the point of view toward Edwards and the covert-operations world. That shift makes espionage and character transformation the natural draw for franchise viewers, while Reece’s return links the two stories. The knowledge of Edwards’s eventual role adds dramatic irony: choices that might read as ordinary mission decisions in another thriller can also feel like steps toward a known future.

If you want more of the franchise and are interested in Ben Edwards as a character—not just in another run of tactical action—the prequel has a clear reason to exist. Its strongest promise is the combination of Kitsch’s lead performance and an origin story with a defined moral destination. Whether its action and pacing consistently support that character work is the deciding factor for viewers who are less invested in the franchise.
