What happens in “The Sound of the Guns”?
Haverford’s past and the Geneva connection
The episode opens after Ish’s death. Haverford is grieving, while also feeling that Ben has avenged the murdered agent. Raife investigates Haverford’s background and discovers that he founded the CIA’s Iranian Operations Division. Haverford’s campaign against Iran is not just professional; the episode presents it as deeply personal.
In Geneva, Iranian minister Yousef attends a birthday party for Cyrus’s son and criticizes Vahid for appearing to lose focus on his mission. After Yousef leaves, Vahid tells Cyrus he has second thoughts about the nuclear arrangement. Cyrus argues that they can still maintain control.

A plan built on disputed intelligence
Haverford’s contact, Shepherd, links the Budapest hostiles to the Khalid Network and reports an exchange involving Molnar’s bearings and Iranian nuclear facilities. The proposed operation is to intercept the shipment and replace the real bearings with fakes.
Raife questions whether the team should act on information from a single source. Haverford trusts Shepherd because of their long relationship. That disagreement hangs over the operation: the plan depends not only on reaching the shipment, but on deciding whose judgment—and whose intelligence—to trust.

Ben and Raife split over the mission
Ben and Eliza scout a possible hijack location and identify a tunnel as an escape route. Meanwhile, Raife’s doubts widen beyond the source: he is uneasy about Mossad’s fake bearings, civilian danger, and the operation’s handling of weapons and vehicles.
Raife tells Ben that Haverford’s personal war is not theirs and reminds him that Ben was supposed to return to the SEALs after the Danawi operation. Ben counters that this work helps people on the front lines. He also says he prefers Haverford’s freedom of action to the bureaucracy of war. The exchange exposes a deeper divide: Ben sees the mission as useful work, while Raife fears they are being drawn into Haverford’s private agenda.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the Geneva plot connects
The Geneva scenes mirror the team’s conflict without duplicating it. Vahid is pulled between his family life, his national mission, and the nuclear arrangement, while Haverford’s operation tests the loyalties and judgment of his own people. In both storylines, cooperation has limits, and personal relationships complicate political or operational aims.

The episode’s recap also reports that Tal hacked Haverford’s phone and interrupted its charging, causing it to die during the ambush. That detail adds another breach of trust to an operation already compromised by conflicting loyalties.
Why the ending changes Ben’s position
Ben has chosen to keep working with Haverford despite Raife’s warning that the mission serves Haverford’s personal war. Eliza’s betrayal turns that choice into a liability: Ben is shot, the bearings are gone, and the team’s internal divisions have become an immediate threat. That is an interpretation of the reported events, rather than a stated explanation from the series’ creators.
The next episode’s official description provides the immediate setup: Ben is alone and hunted as he pursues his betrayer. It confirms the direction of the story without resolving what happened to him in the tunnel.
Series context and viewing
Amazon describes The Terminal List: Dark Wolf as Ben Edwards’s journey from Navy SEAL service to CIA Special Operations, set seven years before the events of the 2022 series The Terminal List. The franchise is based on Jack Carr’s book The Terminal List; that novel is related franchise reading, not the source text for this prequel episode.
