Demi Moore gives the film its human center as Elisabeth Sparkle, an aging star who takes a fictional treatment that creates a younger double, Sue (Margaret Qualley). The result is often funny, frequently disturbing, and deliberately excessive. Whether that excess feels like the point or too much of a good thing will depend on the viewer, but the film’s horror and satire are tightly bound together.
What is The Substance about?
Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, this 2024 feature follows Elisabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore, after she is pushed aside as a television fitness personality. She turns to a fictional product that creates a younger, more beautiful double, Sue, played by Margaret Qualley. The two are required to alternate weeks: one lives while the other rests. The premise’s promise of a “better version of yourself” comes with a rule about balance—and a mounting cost.
This is science-fiction horror, not a real treatment or product. The film runs about 140 minutes: Cannes and the official press kit give a 140-minute runtime, while MUBI lists 141 minutes. Cannes lists it as a 2024 In Competition selection and names it the winner of Best Screenplay. Cannes’ film page and the official press kit provide the film details.
Does the horror make the satire work?
Fargeat has said she wanted to confront the scrutiny placed on women’s bodies and the demand that women remain perfect, sexy, thin, young, and beautiful to be valued. Her method is not subtle: the film converts that demand into a physical nightmare. The body becomes both the object being judged and the terrain where the judgment plays out.

That bluntness is also the film’s comic engine. Its shocks can be absurd enough to provoke laughter, then uncomfortable enough to make the laughter catch. The escalation gives the beauty ideal a literal shape: it is not merely an image to admire, but a system that consumes the person trying to meet it. Fargeat puts her approach plainly in the press kit: “Genre films are political. For me as a filmmaker, they are a great way to confront political and personal matters”.
The film’s directness will not work equally well for everyone. It drives its point home through repeated confrontations and increasingly extreme imagery; viewers who find that repetition or gore overwhelming may feel the argument has been underlined too many times. But the excess is not separate from the satire. It is the means by which the film makes the pressure feel invasive, ridiculous, and frightening at once.

How do Moore and Qualley shape the divided identity?
Moore makes Elisabeth’s public polish and private pain visible without reducing her to a simple lesson about aging. Elisabeth is caught between the image she has built and the fear that the world will stop seeing her when that image no longer sells. Moore’s performance gives the film’s grotesque turns an emotional foothold: the body horror matters because the person inside it remains legible.
Qualley’s Sue is more than a younger replacement. She embodies the ideal Elisabeth has been taught to want, but she also becomes a person whose desires drive the story. The contrast between the two performances makes the film’s central split more complicated than “old self versus young self.” Sue is at once a character and an imagined solution to Elisabeth’s insecurity—and the film asks what happens when that solution takes on a life of its own.

TIME critic Stephanie Zacharek describes a key scene as making insecurity itself feel like body horror. That is one critic’s interpretation, not a measure of consensus, but it captures the film’s strongest connection between psychology and spectacle: the frightening thing is not only what happens to a body, but the belief that a body must be remade to deserve attention. Zacharek’s review for TIME develops that reading.
What makes the film look and sound so physical?
The craft keeps the body in the foreground. Cinematographer Benjamin Kračun, production designer Stanislas Reydellet, costume designer Emmanuelle Youchnovski, composer Raffertie, and the effects teams led by special makeup effects artist Pierre-Olivier Persin, visual effects supervisor Bryan Jones, and special effects supervisor Jean Miel are credited in the official press kit. Together, the film’s image, spaces, clothes, sound, and effects make its central conflict feel material rather than abstract.

That form serves the film’s satire: glamour and grotesquerie are not opposing modes so much as two sides of the same spectacle. The polished image promises control; the horror reveals what that promise hides. As the film intensifies, its effects can sharpen the joke and make it harder to watch at the same time. The key question is not whether the film is restrained—it is not—but whether its escalating visual assault keeps exposing something about the pressure it depicts. Often, it does.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is The Substance an instant classic?
“Instant classic” is a judgment, not a verifiable status. The film makes a strong case for lasting attention through Moore’s performance, Fargeat’s committed genre approach, and a premise that turns a familiar social pressure into unnerving physical drama. Its Cannes Best Screenplay award is a concrete distinction, while its bluntness and punishing escalation are genuine points of division rather than flaws to wave away.

For viewers drawn to body horror with a clear social target, The Substance is a vivid, unusually forceful film. Those who prefer implication to provocation may find its insistence exhausting. Either way, its excess has a purpose: it refuses to make the pursuit of youth look clean, effortless, or harmless.
Where can you watch or buy The Substance?
Availability depends on country and changes over time. The Associated Press reported the film’s MUBI streaming launch on Halloween 2024, which does not establish where it streams now. The current catalogue in your region is best checked through a local service or retailer; the US JustWatch listing was checked on September 10, 2026 and showed streaming, digital rental and purchase, DVD, and Blu-ray options at that time. It is a US snapshot, not a guarantee of present availability elsewhere.
Documented home-media options include DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD plus Blu-ray editions announced by MUBI. A separate SteelBook page documents an Italy-only 4K UHD/Blu-ray edition from Eagle Pictures. Before buying, check the specific edition, included discs, playback-region compatibility, and current stock with the seller. MUBI’s home-media edition information and the Italy SteelBook listing document those formats; neither guarantees current retail availability.
