Cristin Milioti sees Sofia Falcone’s breakdown as the result of both her existing capacity for rage and the harm she suffers in Arkham. “I think it’s both. I don’t think even she knows,” Milioti told TheWrap. Episode 4, “Cent’anni,” shows the confinement and family betrayal behind Sofia’s transformation, while leaving open how much of her violence was already within her.
What pushes Sofia Falcone to break in “Cent’anni”?
The immediate breaking point is the news that Sofia will remain in Arkham longer than the six months she expected. Her family has portrayed her as mentally unfit to return to the outside world, turning a promised period of confinement into an indefinite-seeming sentence. The episode recap by TV Insider describes her father, Carmine Falcone, enlisting relatives to sign documents that frame her as mad and murderous. In the story, that betrayal helps keep her confined for ten years.
After learning her stay will continue, Sofia attacks another patient and insists she is innocent. The sequence makes the episode’s central tension tangible: her rage is real, but so is the abuse and manipulation that have helped provoke and shape it. This is the series’ fictional account of Arkham, not a depiction of or claim about real psychiatric care.
Does Arkham make Sofia violent, or was she already that way?
Milioti does not reduce Sofia’s change to a single cause. Asked about the breakdown, she told TheWrap, “I think it’s both. I don’t think even she knows. I think it’s both.” Her answer keeps two possibilities in view: Sofia brings anger and a capacity for violence into the story, and confinement, betrayal, and the way her family treats her intensify them.

That ambiguity matters because the Falcone family’s accusations do not simply describe Sofia; they help shape what she becomes. Milioti put the arc succinctly: “They did this to her and she becomes it.” The episode shows the gap between the woman her family declares dangerous and the forces that leave her increasingly capable of matching that description.
How does the Arkham episode change the way we read Sofia?
Episode 4 pauses the forward-moving story around Oz to revisit Sofia’s past. It moves her from favored daughter and possible heir to a woman framed by her family and left inside Arkham. That backstory reframes her later actions without excusing them: viewers see the betrayal and confinement that precede her return, as well as the violence she chooses afterward.

When Sofia comes back to the present-day story, she presents herself as more self-possessed and determined to follow her own path. She then kills most of the relatives who helped condemn her. Milioti described the transformation to TV Insider this way: “What I love about that fourth episode is that you get to see how she was driven mad. She has become the thing that she was accused of being by way of what they did to her.” The actor’s phrasing links the family’s accusation to the outcome, rather than treating Sofia’s later violence as proof that the accusation was justified all along.
Why does Sofia’s later breakdown echo her father’s cruelty?
Milioti’s later reflection on the completed season adds another layer to Sofia’s arc. She said Sofia recognizes that she is repeating her father’s history: she treats one child as an exception while destroying that child’s family. That recognition is tied to Sofia’s later breakdown after she is returned to Arkham, not to the immediate trigger in “Cent’anni.”

The parallel complicates Sofia’s pursuit of revenge. She has been shaped by what Carmine did to her, but Milioti’s account suggests she also sees herself reproducing his pattern of harm. The season’s arc therefore holds her victimization and her responsibility in tension.

The interviews support an interpretation of Sofia’s fictional character, not a clinical diagnosis. Milioti’s own answer is the clearest guide: Sofia’s anger and what is done to her both matter, and the character may not be able to separate them herself.
