Spoilers for all of Season 1. In 1996, a New Jersey girls’ soccer team crashes in the Canadian wilderness; years later, the survivors are still trying to manage what happened—and keep it private. The season alternates between those two timelines, linking a fight to survive in the woods with adult lives shaped by secrets, guilt, and fear of exposure. Here’s what to remember before Season 2.
What happens in the 1996 wilderness timeline?
The team’s plane crashes while the players are traveling to a championship. The pilots die, and coach Ben Scott survives with a severe injury. With rescue uncertain, the teenagers try to share food, shelter, and skills. Hunger and exhaustion make that cooperation harder, while private conflicts begin to reshape who has influence. Paramount+’s Season 1 recap provides the plot outline.
Shauna, Jackie, and a broken friendship
Shauna is pregnant by Jeff, who is Jackie’s boyfriend. The betrayal strains Shauna and Jackie’s friendship as the girls try to survive together. It also becomes part of the history Shauna carries into adulthood.
Misty, Ben, and Laura Lee’s attempt to find help
Misty cares for Ben and develops a crush on him; he does not return her feelings and is gay. Laura Lee tries to fly an abandoned plane to get help, but the attempt ends in her death.

Doomcoming and Jackie’s death
At Doomcoming, the group accidentally consumes mushrooms. Jackie, who has not taken them, seduces Travis, Natalie’s boyfriend. The others turn on Jackie and Travis, and in a drugged frenzy attack him. After the conflict escalates, Jackie leaves the cabin and sleeps outside. She freezes to death.
Lottie’s growing influence
Lottie experiences visions and kills a bear, telling the others they will not be hungry much longer. The group has bear meat, and her apparent prediction strengthens the others’ belief that she has spiritual insight. Jackie’s death removes a major source of the old team order as Lottie gains authority.

The characters’ belief that the wilderness is guiding them is part of the story; whether anything supernatural causes these events is not settled. In a TIME review, critic Judy Berman interprets Jackie’s death as severing the team’s last tie to its former social order and connects the emerging belief system to Doomcoming and Lottie’s bear kill. That is a critical reading, not a confirmed explanation.
What happens to the adult survivors?
The adult timeline follows Shauna, Natalie, Taissa, and Misty as the past intrudes on lives they have built since the crash. The stakes are no longer immediate hunger and shelter: they involve privacy, relationships, political ambitions, and the risk that their shared history will become public. SHOWTIME described the series as following the team’s descent into rival clans and the adults’ attempts to reconstruct their lives in its Season 2 announcement.

Shauna: an affair, a killing, and a mistaken assumption
Shauna is married to Jeff and has a daughter, Callie. She has an affair with Adam and kills him, believing he is the blackmailer threatening the survivors. She later realizes she may have killed an innocent man. Jeff, not Adam, is the blackmailer.
Taissa: politics and a disturbing discovery
Taissa is running for State Senate, is married, and has a son. She sleepwalks and behaves in disturbing ways; she has no memory of making the basement altar centered on the head of the family dog, Biscuit. Her public political role sits uneasily beside what she cannot account for at home.

What does the finale set up for Season 2?
The ending leaves two immediate questions: what is Lottie’s group doing, and how will the adult survivors respond to Natalie’s abduction? In the wilderness, Lottie’s growing authority and the team’s developing belief system point to a changed social order after Jackie’s death.
The finale does not prove that the wilderness is supernatural. It establishes what the survivors believe and how that belief shapes their choices, while leaving its cause unresolved.
For historical context, SHOWTIME announced that Season 2 would begin streaming and on demand on March 24, 2023, with its on-air debut on March 26, 2023. Those are original release dates, not a guide to current availability. Paramount+’s November 2025 recap says Seasons 1 and 2 are available there under the plan it describes; streaming catalogs and plans can change.
What to keep straight across the two timelines
| Story element | 1996 wilderness | Adult present |
|---|---|---|
| Stakes | Physical survival: food, shelter, injury, and rescue. | Privacy and social exposure, alongside the consequences of past actions. |
| Authority | The old team order weakens as Jackie dies and Lottie’s influence grows. | Survivors navigate political, domestic, and investigative roles. |
| Secrets | Shauna’s pregnancy by Jeff and the resulting rupture with Jackie are among the group’s personal conflicts. | Blackmail, affairs, a mistaken killing, and a cover-up pull the survivors together. |
Keep the cause of the wilderness events separate from their effect: the group’s belief in Lottie changes the way it behaves, but Season 1 leaves open whether that belief reflects supernatural guidance.
