‘Wednesday’ Cast on Queer Themes and Lady Gaga’s Season 2 Role

The cast frames Wednesday as a celebration of difference, while queer readings remain distinct from confirmed romantic canon. Lady Gaga’s path to Season 2 began with a fan edit of the show’s dance.

Wednesday invites queer readings through its celebration of outsiders, unconventional women and difference—but that is not the same as confirming a romance between Wednesday and Enid. The cast has described the Addams world as a place that rejects stereotypes and makes room for people who do not fit in. Lady Gaga connects to the series in two ways: a fan edit paired her song “Bloody Mary” with Wednesday’s Season 1 dance, and she later appeared as Nevermore teacher Rosaline Rotwood in Season 2 and contributed the original song “The Dead Dance.”

Why viewers read queer themes into Wednesday

The show’s outcast ethos is central to the way audiences interpret it. Wednesday and the other students at Nevermore live outside conventional ideas of normality, while its women are often forceful, strange or unwilling to behave as expected. Those qualities can resonate with queer viewers, particularly against a longer history in which queer and nonconformist characters were often left in subtext rather than named directly. PRIDE explores that context and frames queer readings of the series as interpretation, not proof of a confirmed romantic storyline: PRIDE’s discussion of Wednesday and its “badly behaved women”.

That distinction matters most when discussing Wednesday and Enid. Their relationship and its emotional intensity can support a queer reading for some viewers, but the sources cited here do not establish that they are an explicitly confirmed romantic couple. A reading of subtext is meaningful as interpretation; it should not be reported as canon.

What the cast says about difference and belonging

Catherine Zeta-Jones: rejecting stereotypes

Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams, told PRIDE that the show avoids stereotypes: “I think what the show does … is that we avoid stereotypes.” She also described the Addams family’s outlook as one that welcomes difference: “We embrace the differences we want, the diversity we want, the inclusion of people who are just different, they’re imperfect. That’s okay.” Those comments speak to the series’ broad acceptance of unconventional people; they do not declare a specific queer romance.

Luis Guzmán: permission to be yourself

Luis Guzmán, who plays Gomez Addams, described the show’s message in an interview with the Los Angeles Times: “Our show shows people that it’s OK to be who you are no matter what. It’s not about fitting in — it’s just about living your life, and it’s OK to be how you are. Weird might not be the best word, but in our case, weird is beautiful.” The emphasis is on self-acceptance, not on making every character’s identity or relationship fit a single label. How Lady Gaga became part of the Wednesday story

The “Bloody Mary” dance started with fans

Gaga’s connection to the show began with a fan edit, not the original episode soundtrack. Wednesday’s Season 1 dance was performed to “Goo Goo Muck”; fans later paired the scene with Gaga’s “Bloody Mary,” helping the dance find a second life online. Showrunner Al Gough told the Los Angeles Times that the fan-made pairing helped prompt the conversation about bringing Gaga into Season 2. He called her “the ultimate outcast.” The account is in the paper’s report on how Lady Gaga joined Wednesday.

Gaga plays Rosaline Rotwood and contributes “The Dead Dance”

Netflix identifies Gaga as a Season 2 guest star playing Rosaline Rotwood, a legendary Nevermore teacher who crosses paths with Wednesday. Season 2 Part 2 also features Gaga’s original song “The Dead Dance.” Netflix’s Season 2 update gives the character and song details. Her role is a guest appearance, rather than a replacement for the show’s central cast.

What Emma Myers said about filming with Gaga

Emma Myers, who plays Enid Sinclair, said on Netflix’s official Woecast that she did not film her scene with Gaga in person: “Well, fun fact, I actually did not film my scene with her. She did all of her coverage on a green screen, because they just animated her face onto the statue.” Myers was describing her scene and Gaga’s coverage for it, not every interaction involving the cast. The comment appears in Netflix’s Season 2 Woecast episode 6.
