Spoilers for Zach Cregger’s 2025 film Weapons. Gladys, the unsettling relative staying with Alex Tilly’s family, is responsible for the children’s disappearance. She uses a supernatural spell and the children’s personal belongings to control them. Alex turns that method against Gladys, and the children kill her—but being found does not mean they are all well again.
Why did the children disappear?
Seventeen children from the same class leave their homes at exactly 2:17 a.m. Alex is the only classmate who remains at school. The film’s supernatural reveal is that Gladys has taken control of the children; this is not a case of them independently running away.

Gladys’s spell works through personal effects belonging to the children. The film shows hair or clothing woven around sticks as part of how she directs her victims. She keeps the children in the Tilly family’s basement. The story suggests she is draining their life force, but it does not lay out a precise, rule-bound explanation for what that process is or what Gladys is.
How does Alex find and free them?
Gladys’s control reaches beyond the children: she can also turn adults into mindless attackers. Alex recognizes how Gladys’s method works and uses her own spell-casting technique against her, directing the children to attack. They chase Gladys through the neighborhood and kill her.

The children’s return is not a simple happy ending. After killing Gladys, they stop in a catatonic state. The closing narration says they go back to their homes, but many remain catatonic. Some begin speaking again over the years. Alex’s parents never recover, and Alex goes to live with another aunt, according to TIME’s account of the ending.

Director Zach Cregger has connected Alex’s family story to his own childhood with an alcoholic parent. In a Vanity Fair interview, he described the final chapter as autobiographical and spoke about the child becoming a caregiver. He also said he was not trying to preach a lesson about children of addicts. That context can illuminate the film’s depiction of a household shaped by one person’s destructive behavior, but it does not turn every supernatural event into a one-to-one allegory.

Cregger has cautioned against reducing the film to a single meaning. In TheWrap, he said, “A movie doesn’t have to be about one thing.” TIME also reported that he was not aiming to comment on collective societal tragedies and that he began writing after the sudden death of a close friend. Viewers may connect the disappearance of a whole class to communal trauma or other real-world events, but those readings should be understood as interpretations, not settled statements of authorial intent.
