Its biggest reveal confirms Irving’s suspicion: the person he has been seeing as Helly is Helena Eagan. Irving’s decision to expose her brings the real Helly back, but costs him his job on the severed floor.
What happens in “Woe’s Hollow”
Mark, Irving, Helly, and Dylan wake in a cold, unfamiliar wilderness with no clear explanation for how they got there. A recorded welcome from Seth Milchick supplies one: Lumon has arranged a two-day retreat in the Dieter Eagan National Forest. The recording directs them toward Scissor Cave and the Fourth Appendix, a text about Kier Eagan’s twin brother Dieter and their journey toward Woe’s Hollow.

The outing gives Lumon a new setting for the same old hierarchy. Even away from the office, the company controls the schedule, the story the employees are told, and the small rewards available to them.
Why Milchick takes away the marshmallows
At camp, Milchick presents the Eagan family account as sacred history. Its tale of Dieter’s punishment for masturbating is so grotesque and moralizing that Helly laughs; Mark and Dylan join her. Milchick responds by taking away the marshmallows and ordering Miss Huang to throw them into the fire.

He makes the lesson explicit to Dylan: “Marshmallows are for team players, Dylan. They don’t just hand them out.” The punishment is absurdly small, but that is the point: Lumon turns a treat into a test of compliance and makes belonging feel conditional.
Milchick later tells the group, “You know, we often laugh at what we don’t understand.” In context, the line is less an explanation than another attempt to control how they respond to Lumon’s version of history.

Irving is right about Helly
Irving has been uneasy with the person he believes is Helly. Her behavior and cruelty do not match the person he knows, and his suspicion grows alongside his grief over losing contact with Burt. The episode reveals that his instincts are correct: Helena Eagan has been posing as Helly on the severed floor since the overtime incident.
That deception also shapes Mark’s encounter with Helena. He believes he is with Helly, while she is acting as someone else. A.V. Club reads the impersonation as a violation of bodily autonomy; that is a critical interpretation of the episode, not an explicit confirmation of authorial intent.

How Irving gets the real Helly back—and what it costs him
The confrontation comes at a waterfall. Irving challenges Helena and physically forces Lumon to respond. Milchick orders the Glasgow Block removed, and the real Helly returns.
Lumon immediately dismisses Irving, with Milchick declaring, “For this, there can be no penalty but immediate and permanent dismissal.” Irving’s choice restores Helly to the group, but ends his innie’s employment and access to the people he risked himself to protect.

What the retreat reveals about the team
“Woe’s Hollow” uses an outdoor team-building exercise to expose how fragile the team’s trust is. Lumon wraps its authority in founder mythology, offers approval as a reward, and punishes even a shared laugh. The Helena reveal makes identity itself uncertain; Irving’s response shows how loyalty can require resisting the company rather than playing along.
