Full spoilers for “Sweet Vitriol,” Season 2, Episode 8 of Severance. The episode takes Harmony Cobel away from Lumon’s severed floor and back to Salt’s Neck, the decaying town tied to her childhood and the company’s former ether mill. There, an old notebook overturns Lumon’s official story about who created severance, while Hampton’s help and a call from Devon pull Cobel back toward Mark’s reintegration.
What happens in “Sweet Vitriol”
Cobel returns to Salt’s Neck seeking help from Hampton, an old friend who was, like her, a child laborer. She also visits her aunt Sissy and asks to enter her late mother’s room. In the family outbuilding, Cobel searches for something she believes Sissy kept rather than threw away.

The conversations bring Cobel’s childhood and her ties to the Eagans and the mill into view. Her relationship with Sissy is strained by grief, Lumon’s ideology and competing accounts of their mother’s illness and death. The episode offers pieces of that history, but it does not resolve every detail; some explanations in recaps go beyond what the scenes establish.
What Cobel’s notebook reveals
Cobel finds an old notebook containing her designs for severance. Its discovery reveals that she developed the procedure and technology Lumon has credited to Jame Eagan. When Sissy tries to burn it, Cobel takes it with her. The notebook changes the meaning of Cobel’s long-running connection to Lumon: she is not merely a former company insider, but the inventor whose work the company’s public history has assigned to someone else.

Why Salt’s Neck and the ether mill matter
The episode’s return to Salt’s Neck connects Lumon’s history to a place shaped by industrial labor and Cobel’s own childhood. Esquire’s Brady Langmann reads the setting as a critique of labor exploitation and notes that diethyl ether was historically used as an anesthetic and recreational drug. The recap also connects the title to the phrase “sweet oil of vitriol.” Those details offer historical context, not proof of a particular fictional origin for Lumon or severance.
Hampton helps Cobel escape
As Lumon appears to close in, Hampton warns Cobel and helps her get away in his truck. He remains behind as an approaching vehicle draws near, leaving his immediate fate unresolved at the episode’s end. Ben Stiller later confirmed on The Severance Podcast that Hampton’s closing line was scripted, not improvised: “No, that was in the script, read to perfection by James.”

Devon’s call reconnects Cobel to Mark
While driving away, Cobel answers a call from Devon. Devon tells her that Mark is reintegrating with Reghabi’s help. Cobel asks to speak to Mark and says, “Tell me everything.” The exchange turns a story focused on Cobel’s past back toward the season’s central conflict and sets up her next move.
How the episode fits into Season 2
“Sweet Vitriol” is chiefly a Cobel episode, not a continuation centered on the MDR floor. That shift gives Patricia Arquette room to play a character whose history has mostly been withheld, and the notebook revelation makes Cobel’s past consequential to Lumon’s present. It also pauses the Mark and MDR storyline at a point when viewers may be eager to see it advance.

Critical responses were mixed: the episode reference page records praise for Arquette’s performance and Cobel’s character development alongside disagreement over the episode’s placement and aspects of its character logic. The split reflects the episode’s trade-off: it deepens the story’s view of Lumon by stepping away from the immediate workplace plot, but that detour may not work equally well for every viewer.
