Jack Black’s fourth time hosting Saturday Night Live was built around the thing he does best: turning music into an oversized comic event. His April 5, 2025, return—his first time hosting since December 2005—opened with a mock resignation and a burst into Aerosmith’s “Back in the Saddle.” The episode had plenty of momentum, though its reception was mixed: the Los Angeles Times praised Black’s fit with the sketches and singled out standout moments, while the A.V. Club found much of the writing silly and some premises corny.
What happened in Jack Black’s SNL monologue?
Black turned the long gap since his last hosting appearance into the opening joke. Under pressure to explain his absence, he appeared to quit—then launched into Aerosmith’s “Back in the Saddle.” Cast members and a marching band joined the performance, making the monologue a song-and-dance number rather than a conventional opening set. The Guardian clarified the song identification in a correction published April 8, 2025.
The bit set the tone for an episode shaped by Black’s comfort with music and broad physical comedy. His return came nearly 20 years after he last hosted in December 2005; Peacock and the Guardian describe this as his fourth time hosting.
What sketches were in the Jack Black SNL episode?
Peacock’s official episode recap lists sketches including “Goth Kid on Vacation,” “Flamin’ Hot Preparation H,” “Indiana Jones,” “One Uppers,” “The First Play,” “Bass Lake,” and “Making Love.” Two sketches and one Weekend Update appearance drew particular notice in the Los Angeles Times recap.

“Goth Kid on Vacation”
This Jamaica-set musical sketch takes a goth kid out of his usual surroundings and turns into a My Chemical Romance parody featuring Black. The Los Angeles Times named it the night’s best sketch, a fitting showcase for an episode that leaned into Black’s musical-comedy instincts.
“Flamin’ Hot Preparation H”
The commercial parody pitches an intentionally gross product and keeps escalating the joke. The Los Angeles Times praised that escalation; the premise aims for shock and absurdity rather than subtlety.

Weekend Update’s Ms. Eggy
Ego Nwodim returned as Ms. Eggy and got the audience to shout an uncensored expletive. The Los Angeles Times called it the episode’s wildest and best moment, even while praising Black’s hosting. It was a reminder that the night’s most memorable beat did not belong to the host.
Who was the musical guest, and what songs did they perform?
Elton John and Brandi Carlile were the musical guests. They performed “Little Richard’s Bible” and “Who Believes in Angels?” The latter is associated with their album Who Believes in Angels?; Peacock’s episode recap confirms the songs performed on the broadcast.

Was the Jack Black SNL episode any good?
The episode’s energy is easier to agree on than its overall quality. The Los Angeles Times praised how the sketches suited Black’s comic rhythms and highlighted “Goth Kid on Vacation” and Ms. Eggy as high points. Jesse Hassenger’s A.V. Club recap also registered the high energy, but judged much of the writing silly and some premises corny. That split captures the episode’s trade-off: Black’s musical, all-in performance gives the night a strong identity, but not every sketch turns that momentum into a strong joke.
For the episode inventory, Peacock’s official SNL recap lists the sketches, while its Elton John and Brandi Carlile recap covers the musical performances. Omar L. Gallaga’s Los Angeles Times recap, Zach Vasquez’s Guardian review, and Jesse Hassenger’s A.V. Club recap offer contrasting assessments.
