The May 3, 2025, cold open of Saturday Night Live mocked the volume and subject matter of Donald Trump’s executive orders by inventing a series of absurd ones. James Austin Johnson played Trump, while Mikey Day portrayed Stephen Miller, who arrived with more orders for the president to sign.
What happens in the SNL cold open?
In the sketch, Johnson’s Trump boasts about executive orders and jokes about becoming pope. Day’s Stephen Miller brings him additional documents to sign. The premise turns the signing of orders into a vehicle for increasingly ridiculous proposals.
Among the fictional orders described in the report were reinstating Columbus Day, reducing interracial couples in television commercials, pardoning J.K. Rowling, forbidding Hispanic babies from getting their ears pierced, outlawing ghosts, and making the New York Times Connections game easier. These are jokes invented for the sketch, not actual government orders.
Johnson’s Trump character opens with the line, “It’s been 100 years since I became president … excuse me, days. Wow, feels longer.” Later, the character calls himself “Your favorite president and perhaps your next Pope!” These lines are Johnson performing a Trump character, not statements by Trump.

Who played Trump and Stephen Miller?
James Austin Johnson played Donald Trump, and Mikey Day played Stephen Miller. Quinta Brunson hosted the May 3 episode, with Benson Boone as the musical guest.
Why did the sketch include pope jokes?
The report connected the sketch’s pope jokes to news from that week: Trump had suggested he could become pope after attending Pope Francis’s funeral, and an AI-generated image of Trump dressed as pope was posted on May 2. That is the report’s context for the segment; it does not establish that those events caused the sketch’s writing choices.

During Weekend Update, Colin Jost also joked about the image, asking, “Who posts a photo of themselves dressed like a guy who died a week ago?” Jost compared Trump attending the pope’s funeral to asking, “Oh, we should do a Who Wore it Best?” Those were Weekend Update jokes, separate from the cold open.
