The news turns JJ’s Pogue identity upside down just as the treasure hunt leaves Pope and Sarah in immediate danger.
What does JJ learn at the end of Episode 5?
Wes Genrette leaves a letter addressed to “Master JJ Maybank.” Its instruction is cryptic: ask Luke about “Albatross.” JJ eventually confronts Luke, who first acts as though he does not know what the name means. Luke then tells him that Albatross was the boat on which Larissa Genrette died.
Luke reveals that Larissa was JJ’s biological mother and Chandler Groff was his biological father. That makes Wes Genrette JJ’s grandfather. Luke raised JJ, but he is not JJ’s biological dad.
Why is JJ’s parentage such a major twist?
JJ has lived as a Pogue, defined by his working-class life and loyalty to his friends. The revelation places him by birth in the wealthy Genrette world associated with the Kooks. It changes what JJ knows about his origins; it does not, by itself, erase the relationships and identity he has built with the Pogues.

Netflix Tudum’s Season 4 ending explainer frames the reversal through the creators’ comments. Co-creator Shannon Burke said, “That was the most extreme thing we could think of: That JJ’s actually a Kook.” Co-creator Jonas Pate put the character-specific sting this way: “What would torture JJ the most? The revelation that he’s a Kook.” These are the creators’ descriptions of the dramatic idea, not confirmation of every thought JJ has in the moment.
What happens to the treasure hunt at the Part 1 break?
Episode 5 also ends the adventure plot on a cliffhanger. Cleo has been kidnapped by mercenaries pursuing Blackbeard’s treasure. After Pope deciphers the amulet’s directions, the Pogues go to Charleston. Pope and Sarah become trapped in the catacombs as water rises during the storm, leaving their immediate fate unresolved at the Part 1 break. A contemporaneous Tom’s Guide recap also describes the flooding-catacomb peril alongside JJ’s parentage reveal.

The two cliffhangers work on different tracks: JJ’s discovery is the emotional hook, while the rising water and Blackbeard treasure hunt leave the group’s physical danger unresolved. JJ and Kiara are back on Kildare Island when Part 1 ends.

No. This explanation covers the close of Episode 5, “Albatross,” and the break after Season 4 Part 1—not the later Season 4 finale. Netflix’s release coverage identifies Episode 5 as the point for its Part 1 ending explainer. The episode leaves both JJ’s response to his origins and the Charleston treasure adventure open; those later consequences are beyond this Episode 5 ending.
