On the March 9, 2024 episode of Saturday Night Live, Colin Jost used Weekend Update to mock the theatrical delivery of Sen. Katie Britt’s Republican response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, then made a separate joke about Donald Trump’s speech delivery. The segment followed a different part of the episode: Scarlett Johansson had already portrayed Britt in the cold open.
What did Weekend Update say about Katie Britt?
Jost introduced Britt’s response by saying she “made some choices,” then played a montage of expressive moments from the speech. He gave the imagined one-woman show the title “A Britt Much” and added: “That was honestly some of the worst acting I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen me,” according to Uproxx’s March 10 recap.
The joke focused on Britt’s delivery. Its context also included an anecdote she used to criticize Biden’s border policy. CNN’s March 11 transcript and account said the trafficking survivor’s experience described by Britt took place in Mexico more than a decade before Biden took office. In the cold-open parody, Johansson made that discrepancy part of the joke, saying the details were real “except the year, where it took place, and who was president when it happened.”
What was the Trump joke?
Weekend Update then turned to Trump. Uproxx reported that Jost referred to Trump criticizing another speaker’s words for not “flowing smoothly,” before the show played a clip of Trump speaking unclearly. The report does not identify the clip or provide a full transcript, so the supported description is limited to that speech-delivery gag; it does not establish a catalogue of Trump’s gaffes.

How was this different from the cold open?
The episode used Britt twice, in separate segments. The Los Angeles Times recap distinguishes the cold open, with Johansson playing Britt, from the later Weekend Update jokes about her delivery. The cold open was a character sketch; Weekend Update was Jost’s news satire and included the separate Trump clip.
How did Britt react to Johansson’s impression?
Britt later said she expected SNL to satirize her and welcomed Johansson’s portrayal. ABC News reported March 13 that Britt described herself as “pretty pumped” that Johansson had played her.
