The Masked Singer planned to make its season 12 guessing game more layered by placing clues on some costumes and pairing contestants with alumni who knew them. Executive producer and showrunner Rosie Seitchik described the changes in a September 2024 interview as a way to give viewers more places—and more relationships—to investigate.
What changed in the season 12 guessing game?
The plan extended clues beyond the usual clue packages. Some would be built into costume designs, turning what viewers saw onstage into part of the puzzle. Seitchik said the aim was to keep pace with fans who were getting more observant and wanted new ways to play.
The second change brought the show’s past into the mystery: each contestant was to have a Masked Ambassador, an alumnus connected to that singer. Ambassadors would introduce contestants through new clue packages and offer context drawn from their relationship. Rather than treating each clue as an isolated hint, viewers could look for connections between the current performer and a familiar face from an earlier season.
Seitchik described the ambition as “a whole new level of gameplay” for fans, with clues placed in less expected locations and more layers to consider.

How were costume clues supposed to work?
Dust Bunny was the clearest example in the September 2024 preview. Seitchik identified a toy car, glittery ice-dancing costume material, a lollipop, a car air freshener and popcorn among the clues attached to the character. Some details could be on the back, so a front-facing view would not necessarily reveal everything.
Seitchik called Dust Bunny a “real 360-degree view,” explaining that the character was designed to pick up objects—and clues—as a dust bunny would. She also said objects could be added or removed over the season, giving viewers changing details to interpret rather than a fixed set of costume clues.

Not every costume would be as clue-heavy
The preview did not promise a Dust Bunny-style collection of obvious objects for every contestant. Seitchik said clue density depended on the design: sometimes a costume itself could function as a broad hint, while another character might carry specific objects. That distinction matters when interpreting what is absent; a less decorated costume was not necessarily short on clues.
Which Masked Ambassadors were named?
The interview identified Dick Van Dyke, Jewel, Ne-Yo and DeMarcus Ware as confirmed ambassadors at the time it was published. It did not present those four names as the complete roster. The planned role was to connect a new contestant to a former star whose relationship with them could supply another line of inquiry for fans.

What viewers were being asked to look for
- Look beyond the clue package: inspect costume details, including the back and other angles shown on screen.
- Separate object clues from design clues: a prop may point to a specific detail, while the overall costume may work as a broader hint.
- Track changes: if objects appear or disappear, consider whether that changes the interpretation.
- Connect contestants to alumni: an ambassador’s relationship with a singer could add context that a standalone clue does not.
