Why did Cierra Ortega leave Love Island USA?
On the July 6, 2025 episode, narrator Iain Stirling said Ortega had left the villa “due to a personal situation.” The announcement did not mention the posts. In reporting published the following day, the Los Angeles Times connected her departure to older posts that had resurfaced, including a 2023 Instagram Story and a 2015 post shared again in a 2020 TikTok. The Associated Press reported that a show spokesperson declined to comment. (AP, July 7, 2025)
The distinction matters: the episode gave a brief public explanation, while news reports described the posts and the context around Ortega’s exit. The cited coverage does not establish a fuller official explanation or the network’s internal decision process.
What posts resurfaced?
News reports identified posts from different years. The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post described a 2023 Instagram Story about Botox in which Ortega used an anti-Asian slur. The Washington Post also reported that a 2015 Instagram caption containing the slur was later re-shared by Ortega alongside other posts in a 2020 TikTok.

The posts were historical, but their renewed circulation prompted backlash during the show’s 2025 season. The slur is not reproduced here. The Washington Post also reported on screenshots of direct messages circulating online; those were reported screenshots, and their interpretation was contested. They should not be treated as independently verified proof of a private exchange.
What did Ortega say in her apology?
In a video response posted July 9 and covered by the AP on July 10, Ortega addressed the Asian community and apologized. She said she had not understood the word’s history and harm when she used it. That is Ortega’s explanation of her past understanding.

“This is not an apology video. This is an accountability video,” she said. Ortega also said, “I completely agree with the network’s decision to remove me from the villa. I think that this is something that deserved punishment and the punishment has absolutely been received.” (AP, July 10, 2025)
What did the show and network say?
The episode’s explanation was limited to “due to a personal situation.” The AP said a show spokesperson declined comment; the Los Angeles Times reported that Peacock and NBCUniversal did not comment to that outlet. The Washington Post reported that the show’s X account had posted a general request for kindness toward Islanders on June 24, before Ortega’s exit. That message did not explain her departure.

What was reported about Ortega’s family?
Ortega’s parents posted an Instagram Story asking for compassion and patience and describing threats and cruel messages directed at the family and their supporters, according to the Los Angeles Times. In her later video, Ortega said her family did not feel safe at home and that immigration authorities had been called on them. Those details are Ortega’s account, as reported by the AP; they were not independently confirmed in the cited coverage.
Accountability for harmful language and harassment are separate issues. Coverage of threats or intimidation does not excuse the posts, and criticism of the posts does not justify threats against Ortega or her family.
