Ellen MacKenzie is Jamie Fraser’s mother, which makes Red Jacob MacKenzie his maternal grandfather and Ellen’s siblings his maternal aunts and uncles. Jamie’s father, Brian Fraser, connects him to the Fraser line through Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat. The family tree is easiest to follow by keeping those two branches distinct—and by separating what the prequel shows from details that belong to the books.

Red Jacob and his children
Red Jacob MacKenzie is the father of Ellen, Colum, Dougal, Jocasta, and Janet. That makes him Jamie’s maternal grandfather. His children’s relationships matter beyond the family tree: Colum and Dougal’s rivalry over succession affects Ellen and the clan’s political alliances.
Ellen’s brothers and sisters
Colum and Dougal are Jamie’s maternal uncles; Jocasta and Janet are his maternal aunts. Town & Country describes Dougal’s attack on Malcolm Grant as prompting Colum to offer Ellen’s hand in marriage as a peace offering. ELLE also describes Colum maneuvering for the lairdship and the brothers competing after Red Jacob’s death. These accounts frame the conflict as both a succession struggle and a contest over family and clan loyalties.

The prequel uses Janet as the namesake for Jamie’s future sister Jenny, according to Town & Country. That does not make Janet and Jenny the same person: Janet is Ellen’s sister, while Jenny is Jamie’s sister.
Ellen and Brian’s children
Ellen marries Brian Fraser, and their children include Jamie, William, and Jenny. Jamie is therefore the child through whom Ellen’s MacKenzie branch joins Brian’s Fraser branch.

How Brian connects Jamie to the Fraser family
Brian is described as the illegitimate son of Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat. Lord Lovat is therefore Jamie’s paternal grandfather. The word “illegitimate” describes Brian’s parentage; it does not change the basic relationship in the family tree.
Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser is Brian’s cousin and friend, and is identified as Jamie’s future godfather. He is an important family connection, but he is not Jamie’s grandfather or another direct ancestor.

What the prequel depicts—and what comes from the books
Outlander: Blood of My Blood tells the story of Jamie’s parents in eighteenth-century Scotland. Its other central storyline follows Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, Claire’s parents, beginning during World War I. The two branches explain the origins of Jamie and Claire’s families, but the MacKenzie relationships above belong to Jamie’s side.
The television prequel is an adaptation, not a direct screen transcription of a prequel novel. In an Associated Press interview, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts said the books provide “breadcrumbs,” while leaving room to develop the events that lead toward the original Outlander: “We stick to those, but the freedom is what can we do after that to get to essentially where ‘Outlander’ begins.”

Actor Harriet Slater, who plays Ellen, described the families’ hostility this way: “They don’t mix. It’s completely forbidden. My father’s worst enemy was Brian’s father so I’m sure he’d have had some strong words to say about the whole thing.” This is Slater speaking about the clan conflict, not a quotation from Ellen.
A book-only sibling detail
Town & Country says the books enumerate six MacKenzie siblings, including Flora, who died in infancy. Treat Flora as a book detail rather than a confirmed onscreen character in Blood of My Blood; the cited coverage does not establish that the prequel depicts her.

A wider family complication from the original series
In the original-series family tree, ELLE describes Hamish as Dougal’s biological son, raised by Colum and Letitia. That is a separate complication in the next generation, not part of the central explanation of Jamie’s parentage.
