Spoilers for Season 5, Episode 9, “LESTR.” The penultimate episode reveals that Lester killed Nicky to protect the Arconia, while Howard’s candid conversation with Charles helps the trio uncover a second breakthrough: Nicky’s family took the finger from Charles’s apartment. Both discoveries land on the Arconia’s final day before residents must leave, giving the investigation a farewell-party backdrop.
What happens in “LESTR”?
The episode picks up after the previous installment reveals Randall was in the courtyard when Lester died. The trio tries to catch Randall but fails, then turns to the last day before Arconia residents have to leave. Charles looks for new friends, Oliver plans a last supper, and Mabel keeps working the case.
Mabel and Detective Williams discover a secret room that links the casino and the dry cleaners. The trio later finds Randall hiding in the Arconia and learns why he was in the courtyard. Randall’s account and footage from L.E.S.T.R., the robot doorman, help reveal that Lester killed Nicky to preserve the building’s integrity.
Who killed Nicky, and what does the evidence reveal?
The episode’s central answer is that Lester killed Nicky because he believed doing so would protect the Arconia. Randall’s explanation and L.E.S.T.R.’s video connect the courtyard mystery to that motive. The discovery moves the case forward, but the episode also adds a separate clue about the finger taken from Charles’s apartment.

How does Howard help crack the case?
Howard’s emotional honesty becomes a turning point for both his character and the investigation. After a period of isolation and the end of his relationship with Jonathan, he tells Charles plainly that he wants to belong. Speaking to The A.V. Club, actor Michael Cyril Creighton said the scene made Howard’s behavior across the series make sense to him. He described the moment this way: “The show already deals with loneliness so beautifully, but I never thought that we would see Howard drop the facade and speak plainly and clearly about why he wants to be part of the group so badly.”
Howard’s connection to L.E.S.T.R. and his attentiveness help the group uncover that Nicky’s five sons and their scooter-using grandmother took the finger from Charles’s apartment. The episode’s investigation also draws help from people in the building, including Teddy and Theo Dimas.

Why does the Arconia’s farewell matter?
The case unfolds on the residents’ final day in the building, culminating in a block party. That setting gives the episode’s discoveries an emotional counterweight: the trio is piecing together how the Arconia’s secrets led to violence as neighbors prepare to leave it behind. The episode review describes the hour as nostalgic and bittersweet; those are the reviewer’s judgments, but the farewell gathering and returning residents supply the basis for that tone.
