Spoilers for Season 5, Episode 6. Meryl Streep returns as Loretta Durkin, but the episode’s emotional center is Oliver: a trip through Flatbush brings his foster-care history into view and helps explain why the Arconia feels so difficult to leave.

Why Loretta is back in Brooklyn

After her apartment is damaged by fire, Loretta returns from New Zealand and spends the day in Brooklyn with Oliver. Their pursuit of Lorraine and Sofia gives the episode its immediate plot, while the neighborhood draws Oliver toward memories he has not shared before. TVLine’s September 30, 2025, episode report describes Loretta’s return and the day’s search.

Oliver’s Flatbush childhood, explained

Oliver says he moved through foster care and lived with his second foster family in Flatbush from ages nine to twelve. The revelation shifts the meaning of his connection to the neighborhood: this is not simply a stop on the search, but a place tied to his childhood and to the earliest version of himself he can recognize.

Theater was a place he could be himself

At the Mycyn Theatre, Oliver found a sense of self that he did not feel at home. He describes the theater as one of only two places in his life where he felt like himself. His foster parents disapproved of his involvement, but on opening night he sneaked out in costume just to hear another child perform his line. The small, private act makes his devotion to theater feel less like a lifelong performance and more like a hard-won refuge.

How the backstory reframes Oliver

Oliver has often appeared to be a natural showman: loud, buoyant and comfortable taking up space. The Flatbush story complicates that impression. His persona can still be exuberant, but the episode suggests it was not simply innate; theater offered a place where he could claim an identity and belonging amid instability.

Series co-creator John Hoffman told TVLine that the season’s focus on what “home” means made this the right time to disclose Oliver’s past. He said, “It was something we had thought about, and I just loved subverting the idea that he was always the Bon Vivant — the big mouth, the pied piper.” Hoffman also connected Oliver’s Flatbush history with Lester and Lester’s wife Lorraine, who lived there, describing a symmetry the season could bring to light.

Why leaving the Arconia feels so hard

Oliver’s return to Flatbush helps him understand his fear of leaving the Arconia. In the episode dialogue reproduced by TVLine, he says, “In my whole life, I’ve only really felt like myself in two places.” The line links the Mycyn Theatre and the Arconia as places where he has felt able to be himself. His attachment to the building therefore reads as more than habit or eccentricity: it is bound up with the search for a home where he belongs.

Which fan favorite returns?

The returning character here is Loretta, played by Meryl Streep. She should not be confused with Jane Lynch’s Sazz Pataki: the Los Angeles Times reported on May 27, 2025, that Lynch said she would return in a Season 5 flashback. That separate announcement concerns Sazz, not Loretta’s return in this episode.

Where Episode 6 fits in Season 5

Season 5 premiered September 9, 2025, on Hulu and with Hulu on Disney+, according to the season’s official companion-podcast announcement. TheWrap reported that new episodes arrived Tuesdays on Hulu. The previous episode, Episode 5, introduced L.E.S.T.R., a robot doorman voiced by Paul Rudd that contains Lester’s ledgers; that detail belongs to the preceding episode, not Episode 6.
