Nacho Libre is a 2006 comedy about a monastery cook who secretly becomes a masked wrestler to help support the orphanage where he works. Its story was inspired by a real Mexican priest and wrestler, Fray Tormenta—but director Jared Hess said the film was not a specific account of Tormenta’s life. The distinction matters: the movie borrows a real charitable impulse and the imagery of lucha libre, then turns them into a broad, stylized comedy.
What is Nacho Libre about?
Paramount lists Nacho Libre as a 2006 PG comedy with a 91-minute runtime. Jack Black plays Ignacio, a cook at a Mexican monastery who wrestles under the name Nacho Libre to raise money for the monastery and its orphans. The story’s central tension comes from Ignacio’s devotion to the children and his religious life on one side, and his secret ambitions in the wrestling ring on the other.
Black summed up that contrast in a 2006 interview with CBS’s Julie Chen: “He loves the Lord. But he also loves the Lucha Libre!” The line captures the character’s comic balancing act, rather than suggesting that the film is a sober depiction of religious or athletic life.
Is Nacho Libre based on a true story?
The most accurate description is “loosely inspired by a true story.” The film’s inspiration was Fray Tormenta, the wrestling name of Mexican priest Sergio Gutierrez Benitez. He wrestled in a mask and raised money for an orphanage in Texcoco.

Director Jared Hess said he and his collaborators met Tormenta and told him they intended to make a silly comedy inspired by his life. Hess later clarified that the film was inspired by Tormenta, rather than specifically based on his story. Fray Tormenta also told Slam Wrestling in 2006 that the filmmakers consulted with him. That connection does not make Ignacio or the film’s events a documented retelling of Tormenta’s life.
A 2025 KSL report quoting Hess said Tormenta spent 23 years as a masked luchador supporting the orphanage. That figure is Hess’s account as reported by KSL; it should not be treated as a measure of how long the film’s fictional character wrestles.

Who was the real Nacho Libre?
There was no real priest named Nacho Libre in the accounts behind the film. The real-life figure was Sergio Gutierrez Benitez, known as Fray Tormenta. The shared element is the premise of a priest taking part in masked wrestling to help fund an orphanage—not the fictional name, plot, or comedic characterization.
How did lucha libre shape the film?
Hess said he had been interested in lucha libre before making the movie, first encountering it through a Santo film on television. He also said an article about a Mexican priest who wrestled to earn money for an orphanage helped prompt the project after Nickelodeon acquired its rights.

The wrestling is part of the film’s visual language, not just a plot device. In a 2006 interview, Hess said shooting in Mexico with real wrestlers and fans was important to the production. He also described rehearsing collaboratively with Black and using a stunt choreographer to design the wrestling sequences. These are Hess’s recollections of the production.
Costume choices drew on older wrestling imagery, too. Hess said the team settled on high-waisted tights because they felt true to the look of lucha libre in the 1950s and 1960s. The result is a deliberately heightened, comic version of the sport rather than a documentary portrait of it.

What is Jack Black’s performance and the film’s tone like?
Black’s Ignacio is earnest about both his religious commitments and his desire to wrestle. In the same 2006 CBS interview, Black said he sometimes used a Ricardo Montalban vocal influence for particular lines. He described it as selective, not as the sole source of Ignacio’s accent or a sustained imitation throughout the film.
An Associated Press review characterized the comedy as deadpan and odd, while noting its affection for underdog characters beneath the elaborate costumes and wrestling bravado. That is the reviewer’s reading of the film. The AP’s rating note describes it as PG for rough action and crude humor, including dialogue.

Where can you watch or buy Nacho Libre?
Availability depends on country and date. JustWatch’s US page reported on September 10, 2026, that the film was available to rent or buy digitally, with DVD and Blu-ray listings through Amazon. That report is a dated US snapshot, not a guarantee of what is available now or in another territory; check the current listing before purchasing or renting.
Paramount Japan lists DVD and Blu-ray collector editions with extras including commentary, making-of material, songs, deleted scenes, and a photo gallery. Those are Japanese edition listings, not proof that a US disc has the same features or region compatibility. Paramount Japan’s Blu-ray listing says shipping has stopped and stock may be limited to remaining store inventory. Before buying a disc, confirm its region, language and subtitle options, edition, current stock, and included features on the retailer’s actual product page.
