Emma Stone’s “next movie,” Kinds of Kindness, is no longer forthcoming: Yorgos Lanthimos’s feature premiered in 2024 and opened in US theaters that June. The 165-minute film is a three-part story starring Stone in an ensemble cast; its official synopsis connects the sections through questions of control, identity and spiritual leadership.
What is Kinds of Kindness about?
Searchlight describes Kinds of Kindness as a “triptych fable.” Rather than one continuous conventional plot, the film brings together three connected stories:
- A man without choice tries to take control of his life.
- A policeman is disturbed when his wife, who went missing at sea, returns seeming like a different person.
- A woman searches for someone with a special ability who is destined to become a spiritual leader.
The synopsis establishes those premises but does not explain how the stories resolve or precisely connect. The Cannes record lists the runtime as 165 minutes.
Who stars in the film?
Emma Stone stars in an ensemble that includes Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, Joe Alwyn and Hunter Schafer. The official Disney press kit credits Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou as the writers.

Who made Kinds of Kindness?
Yorgos Lanthimos directed the film and co-wrote it with Efthimis Filippou. Other credited crew members include producers Ed Guiney, Lanthimos, Andrew Lowe and Kasia Malipan; editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis; cinematographer Robbie Ryan; production designer Anthony Gasparro; and composer Jerskin Fendrix. The British Council lists the United States and United Kingdom as production countries.
In an Associated Press interview at Cannes, Lanthimos said he was inspired by reading Albert Camus’ Caligula and thinking about one person’s control over another’s life, including in minute details. That describes an inspiration and a theme; it does not mean the film adapts Camus’ play.
