Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has enough familiar faces and supernatural activity to keep the franchise recognizable, but its crowded ensemble and subdued comic energy make the nostalgia work harder than the story. It is worth watching if you want another visit with the Ghostbusters; it is less satisfying if you want the jokes and characters to drive the film.
What is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire about?
The Spengler family returns to the New York firehouse, where they join the original Ghostbusters and a newer group of characters. Sony’s official synopsis describes the old team developing a “top-secret research lab” to take ghostbusting further. The setup puts family, franchise veterans and fresh faces in the same story, with a new supernatural threat supplying the action.
Gil Kenan directs; Jason Reitman is a producer and writer. The film is rated PG-13 for supernatural action and violence, language, and suggestive references, and runs 115 minutes, according to the Associated Press review.
Do the characters get enough room?
The return to the firehouse naturally invites a reunion, but it also makes the cast feel crowded. The Spenglers, original team members and new characters all need space to register; with so many people sharing the film, individual relationships and comic exchanges can struggle to become its center. The expanded roster adds familiarity and activity, but not every character feels equally essential to the story.

- In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started ? the iconic New York City firehouse ? to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who?ve developed a top-secret research lab. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
The AP critic judged Frozen Empire a “breezier, more serviceable sequel” than Afterlife, while arguing that the new film leans more on family and spectacle than on the comic interplay that is central to the franchise’s appeal. That distinction gets at the movie’s trade-off: it is easier to watch than a dour outing, but it does not consistently make its ensemble funny enough to feel like a fully energized comedy.
Does the comedy balance the supernatural threat?
Ghosts, gadgets and a larger threat give the film familiar supernatural business to play with. The challenge is tonal: the danger grows serious, while the audience still expects the quick character-to-character humor that made the series distinctive. The film’s spectacle can hold attention, but it does not always create room for the comic interplay to build.

Rotten Tomatoes’ published critics consensus makes a similar point, describing “a certain amount of nostalgia-fueled fun” for original-film fans while saying a crowded cast and surprisingly serious tone keep the sequel from truly sparking. That is an aggregator’s summary of critics’ views, not a universal verdict; it is nevertheless a useful description of why the film may entertain without leaving a strong comic impression.
Do the callbacks add up to a satisfying story?
The return to the original New York setting and firehouse gives longtime fans an immediate point of connection. Those familiar elements work best when they help the Spenglers and the original team confront something together. When recognition itself becomes the main payoff, the film can feel as though it is inviting viewers to remember the franchise rather than giving each reunion a story purpose.
That makes the film’s appeal depend partly on what you want from a sequel. If revisiting the firehouse and seeing the generations share the screen is enough, the callbacks provide an easy entry point. If you want the nostalgia to support a tighter character story and sharper ensemble comedy, the crowded cast and serious threat may leave you wanting more.
Is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire worth watching?
Yes, with modest expectations. It is a serviceable franchise sequel for viewers who enjoy the Ghostbusters world, familiar faces and supernatural spectacle. Its weaknesses are more consequential for anyone hoping the reunion will deliver consistently lively comedy or a focused story: the ensemble is busy, and the tone does not always let the franchise’s comic chemistry take over.

The release-period numbers offer context, not a measure of quality: AP reported a studio estimate of $45.2 million in opening-weekend ticket sales across 4,345 theaters, and a B+ CinemaScore, in its March 24, 2024 report. Neither figure establishes how audiences feel about the film today.
