Champion said persistent shortness of breath led his doctor to order further testing. His exact diagnosis was not disclosed.
What happened to Sam Champion?
Champion said he sought medical care because he continued to experience shortness of breath, even though earlier tests had looked fine. His doctor then ordered a nuclear stress test. ABC News reported that the test led to cardiac catheterization, during which doctors placed two stents.
Champion said he felt fine after the procedure and expected to make a full recovery. He thanked the doctors and nurses at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital in New York City. He returned to Good Morning America on March 25, 2026.
Why did he have a heart procedure?
Champion linked the decision to investigate further to his persistent shortness of breath. In ABC News’ March 25 report, he said: “I didn’t know [shortness of breath] could mean a heart attack until I had a nuclear stress test to see what was going on inside my heart, to see how my heart was moving and holding blood.”

ABC chief medical correspondent Dr. Tara Narula, a board-certified cardiologist who did not treat Champion, explained that nuclear stress testing uses imaging to assess blood flow to the heart muscle. A difference in tracer uptake may suggest a blockage and lead to further evaluation. Catheterization can help determine whether a significant blockage is present.
What is known—and what has not been disclosed
ABC News reported that Champion had a nuclear stress test, underwent cardiac catheterization, and received two stents. Champion did not publicly disclose his exact diagnosis in the report. It therefore does not establish that he had a heart attack, which artery was involved, or the severity of any blockage.

Narula offered general medical context, not a diagnosis of Champion’s condition. She said: “If the initial test is negative and you have persistent symptoms, then we very often will send people for more advanced tests, because the tests aren’t perfect.”
Catheterization is not open-heart surgery
Narula said cardiac catheterization is not surgery that involves opening the chest. In Champion’s case, the report describes catheterization and stent placement, not open-heart surgery. Recovery varies; Champion’s expectation of a full recovery is his reported outlook, not a guarantee for others.

What Champion’s account may mean for viewers
Champion’s account shows why persistent symptoms can merit follow-up even when earlier tests appear normal. His experience cannot determine what another person’s shortness of breath means. Anyone with persistent or concerning symptoms should discuss them with a clinician.
