John Boyd, who plays Scola, described the change in a January 2025 interview. Syd is not written off as having died or been fired.
Why does Sydney Ortiz leave Scola’s team?
In the story, Syd is recruited for another Bureau position after impressing senior officials. Boyd said Scola works with Maggie Bell and OA after the move, rather than continuing with Syd as his regular partner. He described Scola’s partner-less stretch this way: “It’s been interesting to kind of have this phase of being partner-less and getting to rediscover himself as an agent a little bit.” John Boyd’s interview with TV Insider previewed the January 28, 2025 midseason episode.

The move is not the same as a firing: the reported explanation is that Syd receives another opportunity inside the Bureau. The available reporting does not establish her exact final on-screen appearance, so it is safer not to name a particular episode as her last.
Was Syd supposed to be Scola’s permanent partner?
Yes. Syd, played by Lisette Olivera, was introduced as a Behavioral Analysis Unit agent rotated onto Jubal’s team, and she was initially intended to become Scola’s permanent partner after Tiffany Wallace’s departure. The plan did not become a lasting pairing: Olivera’s series-regular run was reported to be only a handful of episodes.

That brief run was a production decision, separate from Syd’s fictional transfer. TV Insider, citing Deadline, attributed the decision to “how the character fits in the show.” That is reported behind-the-scenes context, not an on-screen reason given for Syd taking another Bureau post. Showrunner Mike Weiss described the character’s intended value as “a kind of psychological insight to the team and to the casework.” TV Insider’s report and TVLine’s report covered Olivera’s departure from the series-regular role.
Where does Syd’s story fit in Season 7?
CBS lists “Doubted” as Season 7, Episode 4. Its synopsis says Syd seeks help from Isobel and the team when her sister is targeted. Later in the season, the official guide lists “Riptide” as Episode 8 and “Descent” as Episode 9. Boyd’s January interview framed “Descent,” the January 28 midseason episode, around Scola’s partner change, but the sources do not pin down Syd’s precise last appearance. CBS’s official FBI episode guide has the season and episode listings.
