Eric is worth watching if you’re drawn to a commanding lead performance and a mystery willing to reach beyond its central case. Benedict Cumberbatch gives the series’ unraveling puppeteer real force; the trade-off is a crowded story that moves among a missing child, a police investigation, a television puppet and the crises of 1980s New York. The result is ambitious and often compelling, though not always tightly focused.
What is Eric about?
Netflix’s limited series follows Vincent Anderson (Benedict Cumberbatch), a New York puppeteer who created the children’s television program Good Day Sunshine. When his nine-year-old son Edgar disappears on the way to school, Vincent’s family is thrown into crisis. Detective Michael Ledroit is investigating the disappearance, while Vincent fixates on bringing Eric—a blue monster Edgar drew—to the television show.
That premise sets up two kinds of pursuit: the search for Edgar and Vincent’s increasingly personal effort to make the imagined puppet real. Eric belongs to the show’s creative world, but also becomes entangled with Vincent’s grief and deteriorating behavior. Netflix describes the series as a limited series created and written by Abi Morgan. Netflix’s listing and its Media Center synopsis establish the basic setup.
Why is the mystery jumbled?
The missing-child case is the spine of Eric, but it does not remain the only thing the series asks viewers to follow. The family’s response, Ledroit’s investigation, Vincent’s work on a children’s show and the Eric puppet’s place in Vincent’s unraveling all share the narrative. The drama also widens its lens to the city and its institutions.

That breadth explains the “jumbled” part of the verdict: the strands can feel as if they are competing for attention rather than gathering into one clean, steadily narrowing mystery. Lucy Mangan’s Guardian review, published May 30, 2024, praises the show’s originality and scale while describing its broad, multi-strand ambition. A second Guardian weekly review also praises Cumberbatch but reaches a different assessment of how well the series holds together. These are distinct critical responses, not evidence of a single consensus.
What makes Cumberbatch’s performance stand out?
Mangan calls Cumberbatch “mesmerising,” a judgment that captures why the performance is central to the show’s appeal. Vincent is both a grieving father and a difficult man to be around; his obsession with getting Eric onto television makes those sides collide. Cumberbatch gives the character’s volatility weight, keeping Vincent compelling even when the plot around him branches in several directions.

The praise is specifically about the lead performance, not a claim that every element of the mystery is equally successful. If a strong, uneasy character study can carry you through a sprawling plot, that is a meaningful reason to watch. If you want a tightly plotted investigation above all else, the series’ shifts of focus may be more frustrating than intriguing.
How do the period setting and social themes fit?
Eric is set in 1980s New York, a choice that lets the story take on more than the mechanics of a disappearance. Creator Abi Morgan has framed the series around crime, corruption, racism, a forgotten underclass and the AIDS epidemic. Those are elements of the show’s chosen scope, not a comprehensive portrait of the city or decade. This social breadth gives the mystery a larger setting and ambition, but it also raises the same question as the multiple plot strands: do these concerns deepen the central story, or pull attention away from it? Viewers who welcome a crime drama that engages with institutions and social pressures may find the scope part of the appeal. Those looking for a single-minded whodunit may find it diffuse.

- Watch for the performance if Cumberbatch’s portrayal of a grieving, unraveling father is your main draw.
- Try it for its reach if you like mysteries that cross into family drama, creative obsession and social themes.
- Temper expectations if you want a consistently focused investigation or a simple tonal lane; the show moves between grim crime drama and the puppet world of a children’s program.
The strongest case for Eric is the tension between its intimate loss and its expansive ambitions. The same tension is also its main weakness: the mystery can feel crowded. Mangan’s May 30 review makes the case for the series’ originality and Cumberbatch’s performance, while the June 2 weekly review offers a useful counterpoint on the drama’s success as a whole.
