Spoilers for Ron Howard’s 2025 film Eden. The film ends by showing Dore Strauch poison Friedrich Ritter with tainted chicken, then leave Floreana while Margret Wittmer stays. That is the movie’s explanation—not an established solution to the real-life disappearances. The Baroness and Robert Philippson vanished in 1934, and their fate remains unknown.
What happens at the end of Eden?
After the Baroness’s scheme against the Wittmers and Friedrich Ritter and Dore Strauch intensifies the settlers’ conflict, the film’s violence becomes explicit. Heinz Wittmer stabs Robert Philippson, and Friedrich shoots the Baroness. Heinz and Friedrich hide the bodies at sea and tell the others that the pair left by boat.

Margret doubts that story. She warns Dore that Friedrich could eventually remove her, too, and explains that spoiled meat can remain toxic even after it is boiled. Dore feeds the chicken to Friedrich, who dies. When authorities arrive, Dore leaves Floreana with them. Margret refuses to go, saying, “This is home.”
The closing text says the Baroness’s and Robert’s bodies were never found, Dore returned to Germany and published her account, Margret later published a conflicting account, and the Wittmer family remained on Floreana. The film thus gives the mystery a definite dramatic resolution while acknowledging that the central disappearance was never solved.

Why did Ron Howard choose this ending?
Howard and co-writer Noah Pink considered possible explanations for the events, Howard told Entertainment Weekly in a story republished by AOL. He described the process as “like a parlor game” and said he was trying “to parse out the options.” They chose the version that, Howard said, resonated in terms of “character logic and narrative logic.”
That distinction matters: the ending is the filmmakers’ interpretation of an unsolved affair, shaped to complete the characters’ story. It is not proof that Dore poisoned Friedrich or that Heinz and Friedrich killed the Baroness and Robert.

What is known about the real Floreana mystery?
According to TIME’s 2025 account, Friedrich Ritter and Dore Strauch moved to Floreana in 1929. Heinz and Margret Wittmer joined them in 1932; later that year the Baroness and her companions arrived. Two residents disappeared in 1934. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
The historical accounts do not establish one agreed explanation. TIME reports that historian and author Abbott Kahler considers Rudolf Lorenz implicated in the Baroness’s and Philippson’s fate, with Friedrich possibly involved. That is Kahler’s theory, not a confirmed finding. TIME also reports that Lorenz tried to leave on a Norwegian fisherman’s boat and was found dead on Marchena in 1934.

Friedrich did die after eating tainted chicken meat, but that fact does not establish the film’s poisoning plot. Pink told TIME that the filmmakers found accidental death implausible; Kahler, by contrast, describes Dore as delaying her call for help. These are attributed interpretations of the death, not a settled account of Dore’s intent.
Why do Dore’s and Margret’s versions differ?
Dore left for Germany in 1935 and believed Lorenz had killed the Baroness and Philippson, TIME reports. She and Margret later published memoirs that offer conflicting versions of the affair. Those accounts are valuable records of what each woman said, but they do not resolve what happened to the missing pair.

The film is not an adaptation of one specific book. Netflix’s film overview identifies the competing memoirs and later nonfiction, including Kahler’s Eden Undone, as sources connected to the story. It also notes the 2013 documentary The Galápagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden, which investigates the missing settlers and possible foul play.

- In the film: Heinz kills Robert, Friedrich kills the Baroness, and Dore poisons Friedrich with tainted chicken.
- In the historical record: the Baroness and Philippson disappeared, and their fate remains unknown. Friedrich died after eating tainted chicken, but Dore’s responsibility is not established.
- In the surviving accounts: Dore and Margret offered conflicting memoir versions; Kahler’s theory about possible suspects remains a theory.
- At the film’s close: Dore leaves, while Margret stays on Floreana—a character outcome the movie makes clear, even as the real mystery remains open.
What the ending says about the island experiment
The settlers’ attempt to remake their lives away from modern society does not free them from human conflict. In a TIME interview, Howard put the tension this way: “This romantic idea that you could be your best self if you could just get away from modern society is something that we share to this day.” He added, “Yet the problem is we drag society with us because we are society.” Margret’s decision to remain gives the film a final answer about belonging, not about who was responsible for the historical disappearances.

For documentary viewers, the 2013 The Galápagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden offers another investigation of the missing settlers; Netflix identifies it as a documentary about the case, but its current viewing availability may vary by region. Kahler’s Eden Undone is a nonfiction book to consider for further reading, not the source text for Howard’s film.
