What happens in “Shark Attack!”?
Avery asks Max for time
Before the rescue takes over, Avery makes clear that she needs room to decide what to do about her pregnancy. Her relationship with Max is not settled: they have been having fun, but they are not dating or committed, and she does not expect him to be the father. As TV Insider reproduces the scripted exchange, Avery tells him, “This is my decision, and it’s a big one, and I need time and space to figure it out. Please let me have that.” Max has to respect her request even as the episode leaves their feelings unresolved.
Munroe’s injury sends the Odyssey toward a hospital
The medical crisis begins when Munroe is bitten by a shark. The crew treats him while trying to reach a port with a hospital. That plan changes when a nearby boat, the Flicka, sends a distress call: it is taking on water, and two passengers have been attacked by a shark. Max and Tristan head out to help, while Avery tends to a bite aboard the Odyssey. ABC’s official episode description frames the hour around Munroe’s bite and the dangerous detour to rescue the sinking boat.

Brooke takes charge of a brutal rescue
Brooke, the Flicka’s captain and a trauma surgeon, has already triaged the people aboard. One patient needs a double amputation. In the treatment that follows, Brooke and Max clash over how to lead the operation, with Avery assisting. Earlier, Max and Brooke had also disagreed about whether to clean the bite wounds immediately or get people out of the water first and assess them afterward; Max ultimately accepts Brooke’s approach. These are fictional emergency scenes, not medical guidance.
What happens between Max, Avery, and Brooke?
After the procedure, Brooke makes a pass at Max. Avery arrives to find Brooke towel-draped in Max’s room, and the sight lands badly against the unresolved conversation about Max, commitment, and the pregnancy. The moment does not answer Avery’s decision or establish where she and Max stand; it sharpens the personal tension as the rescue plot reaches its cliffhanger.
