Its real test is whether that ferocity makes Grace’s isolation and a marriage in crisis emotionally legible. The result is an intense, deliberately volatile portrait of a couple coming apart—one whose extremity can feel as distancing as it is compelling.
What is Die My Love about?
Directed by Lynne Ramsay and starring Lawrence as Grace and Robert Pattinson as her husband, Jackson, Die My Love follows a married couple who move with their newborn into an old country house. As Grace’s mental state worsens, the relationship comes under increasing strain. The film is adapted from Argentine writer Ariana Harwicz’s novel; the Festival de Cannes lists it as a 2025 competition feature, and the British Council UK Films Database credits Ramsay, Enda Walsh and Alice Birch among its screenwriters.
That premise places early parenthood, isolation, desire and marital breakdown in the same frame. It does not make Grace a stand-in for all new parents, or establish a clinical diagnosis from her fictional behavior. Screen International describes the film as beginning from postpartum depression and then widening into questions of mental health and the couple’s passionate, volatile bond. That is a critical reading of the film’s trajectory, not a universal account of postpartum experience.
Does Jennifer Lawrence’s performance make Grace legible?
Lawrence’s physical intensity is the film’s clearest point of entry. Grace is presented through extremity rather than calm explanation, and Lawrence’s willingness to play her as unruly gives the character an immediate, unsettling presence. The performance makes emotional pressure visible; it does not reduce Grace to a tidy case history or ask the audience to mistake intensity for understanding.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters. A feral performance can register as a person pushing against the limits of her circumstances, but it can also leave a viewer at a distance if force becomes the film’s principal language. Ramsay’s abrasive approach sharpens that tension: Grace can feel vividly present even when the film declines to make her experience comfortable or easy to interpret. The result is compelling in flashes and intentionally hard to settle into, rather than a cleanly explanatory portrait.
What does Robert Pattinson add to the couple’s story?
Pattinson’s Jackson matters because Grace’s story is also the story of a relationship changing under pressure. Screen characterizes the pair as combustible, and that volatility gives the film a counterweight to Lawrence’s performance: the marriage is not just background to Grace’s distress, but one of the central relationships through which the film explores it.

The couple’s deterioration is the dramatic hinge between the film’s domestic premise and its more expansive treatment of mental health and desire. Pattinson’s role is therefore less a separate subplot than a necessary part of the film’s emotional equation. The tension the film asks us to watch is not only what Grace is experiencing, but what happens between two people as their shared life becomes increasingly difficult to sustain.
Does Ramsay’s extremity deepen the film or push it away?
Ramsay’s stated description, quoted by ABC News, calls the film “a love story with madness involved” that is also about isolation and a marriage beginning to disintegrate. That framing helps explain why Die My Love resists being only a story about new parenthood: it is concerned with a couple and a bond that can be passionate and destructive at once.

The same extremity that makes the film distinctive is also its risk. Lawrence’s physical commitment and Ramsay’s abrasive sensibility can intensify the feeling of being trapped inside a deteriorating relationship; they can also make the experience feel overextended. Whether that approach lands depends on how much the viewer values emotional legibility against sustained volatility. The film’s force is real, but force alone cannot settle every ambiguity it raises.
How does the film relate to the novel?
Die My Love is based on Harwicz’s novel, as recorded by both the Cannes overview and the British Council database. That gives readers a direct route into the adaptation question: what changes when the story moves from prose to performance and cinema, and how do Lawrence’s portrayal of Grace and Ramsay’s treatment of tone shape the character’s interiority on screen?

The film’s relationship to its source is a useful comparison point, not a reason to assume the two versions work identically. Readers familiar with the novel can consider what the screen version makes visible through the actors and what remains difficult to pin down. Those who have not read it can still follow the film as its own portrait of isolation and a volatile marriage.

Die My Love is most persuasive as a performance-led study of pressure: Lawrence gives Grace a fierce physical presence, while Pattinson helps make the couple’s deterioration part of the film’s central drama. Ramsay’s abrasive approach keeps that breakdown from becoming a neat explanation, though its intensity may also create distance. This is a challenging, volatile film whose strongest question is not whether Grace is easy to understand, but whether the force of her portrayal can keep the relationship around her emotionally in view.
