Back to Black has a strong central performance in Marisa Abela, but its portrait of Amy Winehouse too often feels smaller than the music and the person it sets out to capture. The film is most frustrating when it treats songs as emotional shorthand instead of letting them reveal how Winehouse made her art. That criticism is not universal: some reviewers find value in its intimate approach, and the film is a story of her rise rather than a complete account of her life.
Is Back to Black a good Amy Winehouse biopic?
It is a watchable but limited one. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, the 2024 biographical drama stars Marisa Abela as Winehouse and follows her early rise from Camden through the making of Back to Black, the album that gives the film its title. Focus Features presents that focused period as the film’s scope, not as a full account of Winehouse’s life. Focus Features’ film page lists the U.S. release date as May 17, 2024.

That narrower remit is reasonable for a feature film, but it places a heavier burden on the scenes it chooses: they need to make the creative life feel as vivid as the familiar public story. Several critics argue that the screenplay and framing fall short. BFI’s Sight and Sound says the script does not match the film’s aspirations; the Los Angeles Times describes its treatment as shallow and reductive. Those are critical judgments, not definitive claims about Winehouse or the people in her life.
Abela’s performance is stronger than the film around it
Abela’s portrayal is one of the film’s most consistently praised elements, including by reviewers who object to the screenplay or its overall approach. That distinction matters: a committed lead performance can make scenes involving Winehouse compelling without solving the larger problem of how the film understands her artistry. Assessing Abela separately from the writing gives the performance its due without mistaking it for a complete portrait.

Does the film do Amy Winehouse’s music justice?
This is where the film’s most serious weakness emerges. BFI Sight and Sound argues that it fails to deliver on its ambitions to focus on the music. The Los Angeles Times takes issue with the use of the title song in a montage, while RogerEbert.com argues that songs tend to function as soundtrack and cues for pity rather than as dramatic structure.
The criticism is not simply that the film includes familiar songs. It is that the music can seem to decorate a story whose scenes do not sufficiently explore the work behind it. When songs arrive mainly to intensify a mood, they risk flattening the distance between Winehouse’s public image and her creative choices—the very distance a music-centered biopic should make meaningful. The film’s ambition and its execution do not always meet.

- Back to Black tells the real story of how Amy's best known and most celebrated body of work came into being
How does Back to Black portray Winehouse’s circle?
Reactions differ on the film’s treatment of the people around Winehouse. In its April 9 review, The Guardian reads the film as more sympathetic to her father, Mitch Winehouse, than some viewers might expect, while also describing the movie as woozy. That is one critic’s interpretation of the film’s point of view; it should not be treated as proof of anyone’s motives or as a settled account of family history.
The Guardian also offers a counterweight to the harsher assessments: it is comparatively receptive to the film’s intimate approach. The contrast helps explain why responses can diverge. A viewer who values a close, personal framing may find more to appreciate than one looking for a forceful account of Winehouse’s music and complexity.

Who should watch it?
Choose Back to Black if you want a dramatized look at Winehouse’s early rise and appreciate Abela’s performance. Go in with more reservations if you expect the songs to drive the storytelling or the film to offer a definitive account of Winehouse’s full life. The film’s limited scope is clear in its premise; the more contentious question is whether it makes that slice of her story feel sufficiently revealing.
