Who replaced Katy Perry on American Idol?
Carrie Underwood replaced Perry as a judge. The official Disney/ABC announcement named Underwood on August 1, 2024, and ABC News reported the appointment the same day. Underwood joined returning judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, with Ryan Seacrest continuing as host, for the 2025 season.

Why Underwood was a natural successor
Underwood won season four of American Idol in 2005. That history made the choice more than a celebrity casting swap: she had experienced the contest as a hopeful, rather than only evaluating contestants from the judges’ table. The official announcement described her as the first American Idol alum to join the judging panel.
Showrunner and executive producer Megan Wolflick presented that connection as a benefit for contestants, saying future hopefuls could get advice from someone who had “walked in their exact footsteps.” That is the show’s stated rationale, not proof that the new panel improved judging or changed the program’s results.

How Katy Perry described her exit
Perry announced in February 2024 that the upcoming season would be her last after seven seasons on the ABC revival. In an April interview with Good Morning America, she spoke warmly about the experience, saying it had “healed my heart,” and left open the possibility of returning someday, calling it goodbye “for now.”
Her wish for whoever took her seat was lighthearted: “Just someone that can put up with Luke and Lionel,” she said, adding, “Keep my seat warm.”

What Luke Bryan said about the new judge
Bryan later recalled Perry’s farewell dinner as emotional. Asked what he hoped for in her successor, he said the new judge should tolerate him and Richie, be on time, and enjoy the role. His advice was: “Just have fun with it and don’t treat it like a job. Treat it like something you love.” The remarks came in an ABC News/Good Morning America interview published June 11, 2024.
The handoff kept two judges and added an alum
The announced lineup preserved Bryan and Richie while bringing in a former contestant with direct experience of the show’s central competition. The public announcements establish that casting choice and the producers’ explanation for it; they do not document an internal shortlist or show that the network formally weighed particular alternative candidates.

The arrangement continued beyond the initial handoff. ABC News reported in August 2025 that Underwood, Bryan, and Richie would return for season 24. That confirms the lineup’s continuation, but by itself says nothing about audience approval or any ratings effect.
