What happened to Freddie’s father?
Davis McClendon was killed in May 2023, according to the show’s description and CBS News. The American Idol description says Freddie wanted the song to celebrate his father’s life rather than center on his death.
ABC News identifies Davis as Kenneth “Davis” McClendon and reports that a jury convicted William “Bud” Ackerman Jr. in October 2024 in connection with the killing. Good Morning America also reported the conviction. That reported court outcome came after Davis’s death; it is separate from the 2025 audition video.

What is known about Freddie’s songwriting?
ABC News and Good Morning America report that Freddie had written music since high school and told the judges that he began taking it seriously about a year after his father died.
