Spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 6, “Confessions.” Buck learns that Tommy was once engaged to Abby, Buck’s former love. The discovery unsettles him, but the episode’s breakup comes after Buck asks Tommy to move in: Tommy declines and ends the relationship, believing Buck may not be ready for that commitment. Oliver Stark said the relationship mattered deeply to Buck, which made its sudden end devastating.

What happens between Buck and Tommy in “Confessions”?

The episode opens on a relationship milestone: Buck and Tommy are celebrating six months together. Then Buck discovers Tommy had been engaged to Abby for two years, before Tommy came out. Those durations are reported episode details in TheWrap’s November 7, 2024 recap and interview (TheWrap).

Buck’s first reaction is shaped by his history with Abby. He is upset that Tommy stayed with her while not being open about his sexuality. After talking with Josh, Buck gains perspective on the pressures Tommy faced. Buck then asks Tommy to move in with him. Tommy turns him down and ends the relationship.

The sequence matters: Abby’s past with Tommy is the revelation that prompts Buck’s reaction, but the reported reason for the breakup is Tommy’s concern about moving the relationship toward a deeper commitment. Abby does not cause the split.

Why does Tommy end the relationship?

Showrunner Tim Minear described Tommy as thinking Buck is still figuring himself out and could be hurt if the relationship became more serious. Minear put Tommy’s view this way: “I’m not your last, I’m your first, which is a special thing to be, but as Tommy says, it doesn’t usually end up being the same thing.” (TV Insider, November 7, 2024.)

That is Minear’s explanation of Tommy’s thinking, not a fact independently established about Buck or a promise about what the characters will do later. The episode frames Tommy’s choice as an attempt to avoid a commitment he believes Buck may not yet be ready to make.

What did Oliver Stark say the breakup meant to Buck?

Stark described the relationship as Buck’s first queer relationship and emphasized how much it mattered to him. In TheWrap’s November 7, 2024 interview, Stark said: “It did and that comes across really lovely in the breakup scene, how important this relationship was for him and how much it meant to him, and therefore, how devastating it is to see it end.”

Stark also said he knew a breakup was possible early in Season 8, but that the decision was not settled until shortly before filming. He noted that the preceding episode helped re-establish Buck and Tommy, giving the relationship weight before it ended.

On Buck’s response to Tommy’s history with Abby, Stark said Buck was protective of Abby, whom he had loved and still respected. Stark’s account also highlights Josh’s conversation as a moment that helps Buck consider the different hurdles Tommy faced coming out in an earlier period. That is Stark’s interpretation of Buck’s perspective, rather than a general claim about LGBTQ history.

Was Tommy always meant to be Abby’s former fiancé?

In the show’s canon, the connection reaches back to the pilot: Abby mentioned a long-term relationship with a man named Tommy. Minear said the writers later drew on that detail to complicate Buck’s story. Stark recalled that when Lou Ferrigno Jr.’s Tommy was introduced in Season 2, he was not initially intended to be the same Tommy from Abby’s past. Stark described the link as “a perfect coincidence.” His comments about the early plan are his recollection of the production history; Minear’s account explains the later decision to use the connection (TheWrap; TV Insider).

How does the reveal fit into Buck’s relationship story?

Before the breakup, Minear said Buck’s new romantic story had been in development for a long time and that the show wanted a fresh direction. In an April 4, 2024 interview, he said, “I have been thinking about this story for a long time.” He also described an approach that avoided familiar shame-and-denial beats, focusing instead on Buck’s confusion about the intensity of new feelings (TheWrap).

That earlier explanation is context for how the show introduced Buck’s relationship with Tommy; it is not Minear’s direct explanation of the breakup months later. Stark separately told TV Insider that a partner who understands the demands of first-responder work could be helpful to Buck, though he did not call that understanding essential. That observation describes one possible relationship dynamic, not the reason Tommy ends things (TV Insider, October 29, 2024).

What later interviews do—and do not—confirm

In an October 2025 interview, Stark said Buck would not intentionally pursue a relationship during the first half of Season 9. He also discussed Season 8 events in which Buck and Tommy reconnect after the breakup and Tommy suggests Buck may have feelings for his best friend Eddie. Stark said there had not yet been much follow-up on that thread in Season 9 at the time of the interview (TV Insider).

That interview describes the story as of October 10, 2025; it does not establish Buck and Tommy’s relationship status as of October 2026. Nor do the cited reports establish current streaming availability. TheWrap’s 2024 mention of ABC and next-day Hulu access is historical, not a current viewing guide.
