Grace Ryder is away from Austin in the Season 5 premiere of 9-1-1: Lone Star, volunteering aboard a Mercy Ship after a church presentation about orphans moved her to go. That is the character’s explanation—not a claim about Sierra McClain’s personal plans. McClain did not return for Season 5, and the reporting does not establish a specific reason for her non-return.
Where did Grace go in Season 5?
In the premiere, Judd explains that Grace left to volunteer with Mercy Ships, an organization that provides medical care aboard hospital ships. The decision followed a presentation at the Ryders’ church about orphans; Grace felt called to help. When Judd tries to contact her in episode 501, the ship is at port in the Solomon Islands, according to co-showrunner Rashad Raisani’s interview with TV Guide.
Judd’s account frames the choice as a powerful spiritual calling, even though it came at a painful and inconvenient time for their family. The character’s volunteer mission is the show’s fictional explanation for Grace’s absence.
Why isn’t Sierra McClain in Season 5?
McClain did not return to the series for its fifth season. Interviews and coverage published September 23, 2024, confirm her absence, but do not establish a specific contractual, personal, or other behind-the-scenes reason. It would be inaccurate to present a pay dispute or another unconfirmed explanation as fact.

That distinction matters: Grace’s decision to volunteer is part of the story, while McClain’s non-return is a production fact. The available reporting does not say that McClain personally left to do missionary work.
Why did the writers send Grace away instead of killing her off?
Raisani told TV Guide that the writers wanted to respect both McClain and Grace and did not want to kill the character off between seasons. He described Grace as central to the show, while noting that her absence creates room to explore Judd and Wyatt’s stories. In a TVLine interview, he explained the story choice this way: “The only thing we could think of to justifiably pull Grace away from her family and job was an even greater calling. And the only thing in Grace’s world that could answer that was God.”

Raisani also emphasized to TheWrap that Grace remains essential to the series and that she cannot simply be replaced. The writers’ choice keeps the character’s future open, although the cited coverage does not confirm a return date or guarantee that she will come back.

In the premiere, Judd remembers how certain Grace was about leaving. TVLine reproduced his description: “She knew it was inconvenient. She knew that it was terrible timing. But she felt the touch of God. I can still see her face that day. Her eyes were shining with tears. Not just tears — this fire, too, you know? And I never loved her more than I did in that moment.” The scene presents his response as a mix of hurt and admiration, rather than suggesting the decision was easy for him.
