She said the alteration degraded and erased her, stressing that her direct gaze in the film poster was a deliberate choice—not a detail to be edited away.
What the Wicked poster edit changed
The official film poster shows Erivo as Elphaba looking directly at the viewer, with Ariana Grande as Glinda beside her. A fan edit altered Erivo’s image, including lowering or changing the hat brim to hide her eyes and modifying features such as her lips, bringing the image closer to the familiar Broadway musical artwork. ABC News reported Erivo’s response to the edit on October 16, 2024. ABC News

The comparison involves more than two versions of the same picture. The Broadway image is an illustration that places Elphaba’s face in shadow; the movie poster presents Erivo as a real performer in a film promotion. Erivo described the film design as an homage to the stage artwork, not an imitation of it. The Hollywood Reporter
Why Cynthia Erivo objected
Erivo’s objection centered on having her face and eyes altered, rather than on the existence of a visual reference to the Broadway poster. ABC’s report transcribed her Instagram Stories statement: “This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen, equal to that awful Ai of us fighting, equal to people posing the question ‘is your ***** green,’” she wrote. “None of this is funny. None of it is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us.” ABC News

She also explained why the film image showed her eyes: “The original poster is an ILLUSTRATION. I am a real life human being, who chose to look right down the barrel of the camera to you, the viewer …because, without words we communicate with our eyes.” ABC’s transcription of the social post includes a repeated “to”; the wording above omits that apparent transcription error without changing the meaning.
Erivo concluded: “Our poster is an homage not an imitation, to edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that is just deeply hurtful.” Her comments frame the edit as a change to her own performance image—not simply a redesign of a fictional character.

After Erivo’s posts, Grande shared the official movie poster to her Instagram Story, ABC reported. In a later response covered by The Independent, Grande called the debate “very complicated.” That later remark should be distinguished from her initial sharing of the poster; it does not establish that she endorsed every position in the broader discussion. What is known about the edit’s reach
TheWrap reported that the edit had nearly seven million TikTok views as of its October 16, 2024 story. That is a dated figure reported by the outlet, not a current view count or an independently verified total. TheWrap
