Its presenters read headlines while undressing, and a January 2002 report said its ratings had surpassed the state broadcaster’s traditional late-evening newscast. But the available contemporary reports do not show that popularity caused MSAT to suspend the program: the station gave no reason.
What was The Naked Truth?
It was a Bulgarian television news program, not the unrelated American sitcom with the same title. MSAT TV launched it in December 2001. The format paired conventional Bulgarian and international headlines with female presenters removing their clothes as they read. IOL/Sapa-AFP reported on the launch on December 11, 2001.
The launch report said the show was scheduled for 11 p.m. every weeknight. It described Galina Petkova presenting the news and named Diana, Viki and Iva as colleagues preparing to appear. Producer Stilian Ivanov said, “We carefully selected the girls so that they are intelligent and not vulgar.” He also described the intended cast as “average Bulgarian girls, and not sex bombs.”
Did the show become popular?
A January 10, 2002 report said the 10-minute program’s ratings had surpassed the state broadcaster’s traditional late-evening newscast. That is a reported comparison, not a published audience figure: the report supplied no ratings numbers, measurement provider, sample or date range. It therefore does not establish that the show was Bulgaria’s highest-rated program, or quantify how many people watched it. Huron Daily Tribune, “Bulgarian Station Halts Nude News,” January 10, 2002.

Why was it taken off the air?
By January 2002, MSAT had suspended the program while its owners considered whether to cancel it. The contemporary report said the station did not give a reason. A station reporter denied that the suspension was connected to a concern raised by the Council on Electronic Media over possible plagiarism of the name of a defunct Russian program. The Associated Press report carried by the Houston Chronicle on January 12, 2002, also reported the halt.
That leaves two distinct points: a contemporary report described the show as outperforming a particular rival newscast, while the cause of its suspension was not announced. The sources do not establish that MSAT pulled it because it was too successful. Nor do they establish that the media council ordered the suspension, or that a final regulatory finding of plagiarism was made. A brief India Today item published February 3, 2002 confirms that the program had been taken off air but gives no explanation.
