“Surprise,” listed by ABC as Season 2, Episode 13, was scheduled to air February 4, 2026, from 8:00 to 8:30 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. ABC’s official show page describes the series as following Matt, a stubborn man whose estranged daughter and her children move into his home. The finale’s official logline sets up complications in Matt’s revived love life and a chance romantic moment that makes Riley and Gabe question their relationship. ABC also named Jenna Elfman, Jesse Williams, Angela Kinsey, and Mookie Betts as guest stars.

The episode’s sharpest unresolved question is Riley’s choice between Gabe, played by Seann William Scott, and Andy, played by Jesse Williams. In a TheWrap interview published February 19, 2026, showrunner Michelle Nader said the creative team had changed its original plan to end Riley and Andy’s relationship: “Jesse’s talent and their chemistry made us pivot.” She added, “I have no idea where this goes, which is the exciting part. I think that’s what’s exciting to the audience, too.” The outcome remains open rather than resolving the triangle in the finale.

TheWrap reported that Disney multiplatform data combined with Nielsen live-plus-seven-day big data and panel figures put the finale at 6.9 million viewers and a 0.99 rating among adults 18–49. That total counts viewing over a week across ABC, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and digital platforms after the February 4 broadcast; it is not a live-broadcast-only audience.

TheWrap calculated the seven-day figures as a 59% increase in viewers and a 154% increase in the adults 18–49 rating over the same-day baseline. These percentages describe delayed multiplatform growth against that baseline, not week-over-week growth or a comparison between seasons. TheWrap characterized 6.9 million as the show’s biggest audience since its fall premiere; the figures do not establish that the finale was the show’s highest-rated episode or that viewers approved of it.
Does the finale give the sitcom a future?
It gives the story somewhere to go: Riley’s romantic choice is unresolved, while the episode’s official setup also leaves complications in Matt’s love life. That is narrative runway, not a guarantee that the next season will follow any particular pairing or plot.

There is also a concrete programming answer. ABC’s July 27, 2026 announcement included Shifting Gears among the returning series whose new seasons would debut in 2027. The finale was therefore not the series finale, and ABC subsequently committed to another season. The timing matters: when TheWrap published its February 19 ratings report, the show had not yet been renewed.
Together, the open relationship story, the reported delayed audience and ABC’s later decision to bring the series back support the idea that Shifting Gears still has room to continue. They do not amount to a critical verdict or a measure of audience sentiment; the cited coverage provides no viewer survey establishing how people felt about the finale.
