AI-generated tracks are taking up a rapidly growing share of new uploads on Deezer, but that does not show they are taking a comparable share of listeners’ attention or artists’ royalties. The clearest evidence points to a widening supply of AI music—not proven, platform-wide displacement of human-made music.
What the numbers show—and what they do not
In July 2026, Deezer said AI-generated music exceeded half of the tracks uploaded to the service each day. That is a measure of incoming uploads on Deezer, not of the share of its plays, recommendations, listening time, or royalties. Deezer had reported nearly 75,000 AI-generated tracks a day, about 44% of its daily uploads, in April 2026; the later figure describes a change in the platform’s reported upload mix, not the whole streaming industry. Deezer’s April announcement and July update report those figures.
Uploads measure supply. Listening and recommendations measure attention. An increase in one cannot by itself establish a rise in the other, and Deezer’s numbers should not be treated as estimates for Spotify or other services.
Are listeners actually hearing more AI music?
A 2026 preprint, An Empirical Analysis of AI Slop in Music Streaming, examined Spotify activity and reported that 93% of AI music in its analyzed dataset received few or no plays and was rarely recommended. That finding offers a counterpoint to upload-growth headlines: a large volume of tracks can enter a catalog without attracting much attention. It is a result from the study’s dataset, not a universal rate for Spotify, all listeners, or streaming platforms generally. Read the study.

Deezer also reported a blind-test result: 97% of participants could not distinguish AI-generated music from human-made music in a test containing two AI tracks and one human-made track. This is a narrowly described test, not proof that listeners cannot identify AI music in general, or that they are routinely listening to it without knowing. Deezer’s July announcement describes the result.
How Deezer and Spotify are responding
The services’ announcements describe different tools and policies. Deezer discusses identifying and labeling AI-generated tracks; Spotify’s announced label concerns AI-generated artist identities. Those measures should not be confused with a universal labeling standard or a ban on music made with AI tools.

Does this mean human artists are losing plays or royalties?
The cited evidence does not establish that AI-generated music has broadly displaced human-made music in plays or royalties across streaming services. Deezer’s upload statistics do not measure listening or earnings; the Spotify preprint’s engagement findings concern its own analyzed dataset and do not quantify a change in human artists’ income.
Spotify says royalties are based on listener engagement and that music is treated equally regardless of the tools used to produce it. Its policies also target artificial streaming and manipulation. These statements describe Spotify’s approach; they do not show how much, if at all, AI-generated tracks have changed human artists’ earnings. Spotify for Artists’ artificial-streaming information.

How to read future AI-music claims
- Check the metric: uploads, catalog share, plays, recommendations, and royalties answer different questions.
- Check the platform and date: a Deezer upload figure is not an industry-wide statistic, and platform policies can change.
- Check what is being labeled: a label for an AI-generated artist identity is not necessarily a track-by-track label for every AI-assisted recording.
- Separate volume from impact: a surge in uploads shows that more tracks are being supplied; it does not alone show that listeners are choosing them over human-made music.
