Trey Parker and Matt Stone bought Colorado’s Casa Bonita to save a place they loved. They expected a manageable refresh; instead, a troubled building and finicky attractions turned the renovation into a reported project costing more than $40 million—and, in one 2026 account, about $50 million. The owners have described the restaurant as nearly breaking even, not as a proven financial success or failure.
Why Parker and Stone bought Casa Bonita
Casa Bonita is more than a Mexican restaurant. Since opening in Lakewood, Colorado, in 1974, it has drawn visitors with its pink facade, themed rooms, caves, cliff divers and other attractions. The appeal was an immersive outing, with food only one part of the experience. NPR’s Fresh Air describes the place’s role in Parker’s childhood and his wish to preserve it for his daughter and future generations.
In August 2021, Parker and Stone announced an agreement to buy the attraction, subject to bankruptcy proceedings. Their purchase rescued the beloved Lakewood destination from closure; Axios later reported a purchase price of $3.1 million. Axios’s 2024 account put that figure in the context of the much larger restoration that followed.
Parker made clear that preservation mattered more to him than a conventional business calculation. In an excerpt from the documentary, transcribed by Fresh Air, he said: “Any savvy business person would say, get out now, you know (laughter)? But I’m not savvy. And it was just like, that’s not the point. It’s trying to save something.”

How much did the Casa Bonita renovation cost?
There is no single, independently audited total established in the cited reporting. Published figures vary because they describe different stages and accounts of the project, from early budgets to later estimates and reported final costs.
| Source and date | Figure reported | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Rolling Stone, 2024 | $10 million, growing to roughly four times that amount | The project’s evolving budget as recounted by the owners in an interview. |
| NPR’s Fresh Air, 2024 | $6 million initial budget; later estimate above $20 million | The renovation budget and a subsequent estimate, with electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning work among the major needs. |
| Axios, 2024 | $6.5 million initial budget; costs above $40 million | The original budget and later reported restoration costs after crews essentially rebuilt the attraction from the studs. |
| KYGO, 2026 | $7–8 million expected; about $50 million final tab | The owners’ account of their original expectation and final cost, as reported from their Jimmy Kimmel appearance. |
These figures should not be collapsed into a precise, audited total. A concise answer is that the renovation began with expectations in the range of roughly $6 million to $10 million, while later reporting put the cost above $40 million and, in KYGO’s 2026 account of the owners’ remarks, at about $50 million.

Why the renovation became so expensive
The building needed more than fresh paint
The buyers initially imagined that new carpets and paint might be enough. In the 2024 Rolling Stone interview, Stone summed up their preparation bluntly: “We did zero due diligence.” Once work began, crews encountered foundational rot and major electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning needs. What looked like a refresh became extensive reconstruction.
Restoring an attraction is not the same as renovating a dining room
Casa Bonita’s identity depends on its elaborate environment and entertainment as well as its food. The work extended beyond repairing the building to rebuilding the attraction. Reporting described repeated setbacks, missed opening targets and temperamental features, including animatronics. Each complication made it harder to treat the project as a straightforward restaurant renovation.

The owners wanted to improve the experience, too
The aim was not simply to reproduce every shortcoming of the old Casa Bonita. The project also sought to improve the food and entertainment for modern visitors. Chef Dana Rodriguez was brought in to lead the kitchen, another part of restoring the full outing rather than just the building’s appearance.
Did Parker and Stone lose money on Casa Bonita?
Public remarks do not establish that the owners lost a specific amount, nor do they prove the restaurant is profitable. In a 2026 account of their Jimmy Kimmel appearance, KYGO quoted Stone saying: “It is going really well, and we think we might make our money back sometime, like, 2040. We’re almost breaking even at this point.” That is an interview statement and an expectation, not an audited financial disclosure or a guaranteed payback date.

In the same account, Parker called the undertaking “a really dumb thing to do” from a conventional business perspective, while explaining that they went ahead because otherwise Casa Bonita might not exist. The clearest supported conclusion is that the owners described the project as nearly breaking even and said they might recoup their investment around 2040—not that they have already recovered the costs.
