John Oates and Daryl Hall’s legal fight centered on Oates’s proposed sale of his stake in their joint business entity, Whole Oats Enterprises LLP—not a public sale of every Hall & Oates song. Hall sued in November 2023, arguing the proposed deal breached their agreement. The dispute went to private arbitration, which Hall’s attorneys said had reached a final judgment in August 2025; its terms have not been made public. Their personal relationship remains strained, and no reunion has been announced.
Why did Daryl Hall sue John Oates?
Hall sued in Nashville in November 2023 to stop Oates from selling his interest in Whole Oats Enterprises LLP to Primary Wave IP Investment Management LLC. Hall argued the proposed transaction violated their business agreement and sought a restraining order. A judge paused the sale while the dispute proceeded through private arbitration, according to the Associated Press.
Whole Oats was a business entity holding assets associated with the partnership. AP’s account of a court declaration described trademarks, name and likeness rights, record royalty income, and website and social-media assets. That is different from saying Oates was selling every Hall & Oates song or the duo’s entire music catalogue.
Hall’s and Oates’s accounts differed
Hall’s court filings characterized the proposed sale as an “ultimate partnership betrayal” and alleged that Oates had acted behind his back and breached their agreement. Oates rejected Hall’s account. In a 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Oates said he wanted to exit a complex arrangement and believed selling his half could give Hall room to operate independently. These were opposing claims and explanations, not findings that a court publicly made about who was right.

Was the Hall and Oates legal dispute resolved?
In August 2025, Hall’s attorneys reported that the arbitration had reached a final judgment and asked for the court case to be dismissed, as the Associated Press reported. The Guardian, carrying an AP report, also said the dispute had been resolved through arbitration.
The arbitration was private. Public reporting did not disclose the award’s financial terms, how assets were allocated, whether either side made concessions, or which party prevailed. TheWrap reported that Hall filed for voluntary dismissal without prejudice; that procedural step does not reveal the confidential arbitration terms or establish a public settlement amount.

What have Hall and Oates said about their relationship?
Their remarks came at different times and should not be treated as a shared account. Hall’s filings described trust as having deteriorated. Oates disputed Hall’s accusations and, in a 2024 interview, said he still loved Hall “like a brother.” In May 2024, Oates also told the Los Angeles Times: “Brothers have disagreements, families grow apart.”
While the proceedings were ongoing, Oates told AP in 2024, “There’s been no communication.” Asked about the possibility of playing together again, he said: “I personally don’t see it happening. It’s not in my plans at all.” In February 2025, when The Times asked Hall whether the relationship could be mended, Hall replied: “That ship has gone to the bottom of the ocean,” according to AP.

Will Hall & Oates reunite?
Oates’s 2024 statement is clear about his plans at that time: he did not see a duo reunion happening and said it was not in his plans. Hall’s 2025 answer about mending the relationship was pessimistic. Neither statement establishes what either musician may decide in the future, and the arbitration’s resolution does not show that they reconciled or agreed to collaborate again.
Oates’s 2024 solo album Reunion is not a Hall & Oates reunion. AP reported that Oates connected the title to his father’s wish to reunite with Oates’s late mother, as well as his own wish to reconnect with himself as a person and musician.
