What About Bob? is a 1991 comedy about a patient who follows his psychiatrist on vacation—and becomes more welcome to the doctor’s family than the doctor himself. Bill Murray plays Bob Wiley, Richard Dreyfuss plays Dr. Leo Marvin, and Frank Oz directs. Although the story is set at a New Hampshire lake, much of its vacation setting was filmed at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia.
What is the story of What About Bob??
Bob Wiley, played by Bill Murray, is a patient coping with multiple phobias. His psychiatrist, Dr. Leo Marvin, played by Richard Dreyfuss, leaves town for a family vacation. Bob follows him to the lakeside retreat, where Leo’s wife and son warm to Bob as Leo becomes increasingly frustrated. The setup turns a doctor-patient relationship into an escalating domestic farce; it is a comic premise, not a clinical guide to mental health.
Julie Hagerty plays Leo’s wife, Fay Marvin, and Charlie Korsmo plays their son, Siggy. The studio’s synopsis and release details are catalogued by D23.
Who made the film?
Frank Oz directed the film. The credited writers are Tom Schulman, Alvin Sargent, and Laura Ziskin; Ziskin also produced it. The American Film Institute (AFI) catalog and the British Film Institute (BFI) catalog list the principal credits.

Catalogs differ slightly on running time: AFI lists 98 minutes, while D23 and BFI list 99. AFI gives the U.S. release date as May 17, 1991, and lists the film as PG.
How Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss came to star
The path to the final cast involved reported possibilities, not a settled set of offers. AFI’s production history says Garry Marshall was initially attached to direct. The project was reported under the working title What’s the Matter with Bob?; Bill Murray and Robin Williams were reported as being considered for Bob Wiley, while Tom Hanks was reported as Disney’s first choice before turning the role down. These are historical reports preserved in AFI’s account, not confirmation that any of those actors received or accepted an offer.

AFI says Murray’s casting was officially announced in March 1990. Frank Oz signed on to direct later that year, and Richard Dreyfuss’s casting was announced in August 1990. The account draws on contemporary production reporting and other records cited in the AFI catalog.
Where was What About Bob? filmed?
The story places the Marvin family at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, but the production filmed its lakeside material at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. According to AFI’s production history, principal photography began on August 27, 1990, with filming in New York before the company moved to Virginia.

New York locations
- Filming began in Greenwich Village.
- Other locations included Union Square Park and the exterior of the New York Convention Center.
Virginia locations
- Smith Mountain Lake stood in for Lake Winnipesaukee.
- Bedford locations included the Elks National Home.
- Interiors for Bob’s apartment and Dr. Marvin’s office were filmed on a soundstage at Bedford Armory.
AFI reports that the location choice reflected the waning summer season and the availability of a suitable lakefront house near a resort area that could accommodate cast and crew. The house was altered with green shutters and a shingled roof. AFI also recounts contemporary objections from some Lake Winnipesaukee residents that the film was not shot there, along with New Hampshire Film Commission representative Charlene Joyce’s criticism of the depiction as “tacky.”
The Virginia Department of Economic Development reported that $4.1 million of the production budget was spent in Virginia, as cited in AFI’s account of a June 7, 1991 Hollywood Reporter item.

How was the film received, and how much did it gross?
AFI characterizes the critical reception as mixed. Its catalog history, citing a 2004 Wall Street Journal item, reports cumulative box-office grosses of $63.7 million. The Numbers lists $63,710,000 in domestic box office; that figure is specifically domestic, not a worldwide total, and the site’s record was accessed October 7, 2026.
AFI also reproduces the film’s final title card: “Bob went back to school to become a psychologist. He then wrote a huge best seller: ‘Death Therapy.’ Leo is suing him for the rights.”

What is known about the home-video release?
The Numbers lists a July 11, 2000 video release by Buena Vista Home Entertainment. BBFC classification records also document physical-media releases. These historical records establish a home-video trail, but they do not establish current stock, identify every edition, or confirm an official Blu-ray release. They also do not verify present streaming availability.
If you are looking for a physical copy, check the specific listing for format, edition, condition, region compatibility, and seller authorization rather than assuming that an old release record describes what is currently for sale.
