Pornhub did not say it had permanently deleted every unverified video. On December 14, 2020, it announced that previously uploaded videos not created by content partners or members of its Model Program had been suspended and would be reviewed. Contemporary reports estimated that millions disappeared from public view, but did not establish the final fate of each video.
What Pornhub changed on December 14, 2020
Pornhub said it had suspended previously uploaded content that was not created by a content partner or a Model Program member. TechCrunch reported that the suspended material was to be reviewed; the company’s announcement, quoted by Ars Technica, used the word “suspended.” Those descriptions support saying the videos were removed from public access, not that all were permanently deleted.
The action formed part of a wider policy package. Pornhub had restricted new uploads to content partners and Model Program members, removed ordinary download functionality while retaining a paid-download exception for verified Model Program members, and announced expanded moderation measures. These were company-announced policies, not independent proof of how effectively they worked.
Why the platform acted
The changes came amid public allegations about illegal and nonconsensual material, payment processor scrutiny and related action. A New York Times column published December 4, 2020, was part of the context described in contemporaneous coverage. The available reporting does not establish that any one event was the sole cause of Pornhub’s decision.

Pornhub framed its policy as a way to ensure that content came from verified uploaders. In a statement reported by TechCrunch, the company said: “This means every piece of Pornhub content is from verified uploaders, a requirement that platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter have yet to institute.” That was Pornhub’s comparative claim, not an independent finding about safeguards on those other services.
How many videos were affected?
Contemporary estimates differed, and neither should be treated as an audited final count.

The estimates vary, but both describe a drop of millions of videos from public view. They do not show that every affected video was permanently erased, nor do they establish what happened to individual videos after review.

In 2024, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada found that MindGeek’s continued reliance solely on uploaders to verify consent did not ensure valid and meaningful consent from all individuals depicted. The regulator also found contraventions of Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). This later finding bears on consent-verification practices; it is not a record of the final disposition of every video suspended in 2020.
