Maurice DuBois announced that his final CBS News broadcast would be December 18, 2025, but the anchor vacancy was temporary: CBS named Tony Dokoupil as the next CBS Evening News anchor, with his role scheduled to begin January 5, 2026. The transition followed the earlier departure announcement by co-anchor John Dickerson.
When did Maurice DuBois leave CBS Evening News?
DuBois announced his departure in an Instagram post quoted by the Los Angeles Times: “Moving on: December 18th is the day of my last broadcast on CBS News.” He added, “It has been the Honor of a Lifetime.” CBS’s farewell-video page, dated December 19, describes Dickerson and DuBois sharing farewell thoughts after their final broadcast, aligning with December 18 as the last broadcast date.
The two had joined CBS Evening News in January 2025, following Norah O’Donnell. Dickerson had announced his exit before DuBois made his December announcement.
Was CBS Evening News left without an anchor?
The phrase describes an anticipated interim gap during the December 2025 transition, not the program’s status after the announced succession. The Associated Press reported that CBS appointed Tony Dokoupil to replace Dickerson and DuBois, with his new role scheduled to begin January 5, 2026. The available announcement establishes that plan; it does not establish later changes beyond that scheduled start.

Why did Maurice DuBois leave?
The cited reports establish his departure date, but do not establish a reason for his decision. The Los Angeles Times described the Dickerson-DuBois approach as an effort to bring longer, “60 Minutes”-style reports to the evening newscast. It also said the format had not gained ratings traction and the program continued to trail ABC and NBC. That assessment is context about the show, not proof that ratings prompted either anchor to leave.
DuBois’s career at CBS
DuBois joined CBS in 2004 and spent years co-anchoring newscasts at WCBS in New York before taking the national evening role. CBS’s talent biography describes more than three decades of journalism experience and reporting on a range of major news and cultural subjects. The Los Angeles Times characterized his WCBS tenure as about 20 years.

What the 2025 audience figures do—and do not—show
In its 2025 coverage of Dokoupil’s appointment, the Associated Press attributed audience figures and year-over-year changes to Nielsen. These are figures reported in that coverage, not current 2026 ratings:
| Newscast or measure | Figure reported by AP, citing Nielsen |
|---|---|
| CBS Evening News viewers in a head-to-head comparison with Fox | 4.04 million, compared with 3 million for Fox’s evening newscast |
| ABC World News Tonight average nightly viewers | 7.83 million |
| NBC Nightly News average nightly viewers | 6.19 million |
| Year-over-year audience change | CBS down 16%; ABC down 2%; NBC down 3% |
These reported audience comparisons provide a snapshot of the competitive context described at the time. They do not establish why DuBois or Dickerson left, and should not be read as present-day ratings.
