Charlie Hebdo published 19 caricatures of Elon Musk in January 2025 and posted them on X, the platform he owns, inviting him to choose his favorite. The magazine framed the series as a test of Musk’s public defense of freedom of expression: it would use his own platform to satirize him.

What did Charlie Hebdo’s cartoons of Elon Musk show?

Coverage of the series described Musk in a range of political, religious and deliberately provocative scenes. One depicted him as a “new prophet” crucified on a rocket; another showed him as an infant held by Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni. Other drawings paired him with Donald Trump and Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg. A caption in one cartoon called Musk and Zuckerberg “child killers” in a cyberbullying context. These captions and images were the magazine’s satire, not factual findings.

Reports described 19 drawings released in three batches. The series also included crude and sexualized images. The range of subjects and tone made the campaign more than a single caricature: it was a sustained provocation directed at Musk and the political and technology figures associated with him.

Why did the magazine post the caricatures on X?

Charlie Hebdo tied the decision to Musk’s public defense of free speech. In a statement reported by Cybernews, the magazine said: “Elon Musk prides himself on defending freedom of speech. Charlie Hebdo has decided to make full use of it by publishing cartoons of its famous boss on X.”

The magazine also tagged Musk and asked him to weigh in: “Hi Elon Musk! We hope you like our idea of freedom of expression. Please, don’t hesitate to tell us which design you like best.” Posting the cartoons on the platform he owns sharpened the point: the magazine was exercising the expression it said Musk champions in a place where he had a direct and public opportunity to respond.

When did the campaign happen?

  • January 7, 2025: The tenth anniversary of the attack on Charlie Hebdo’s Paris newsroom, in which 12 people were killed. Coverage noted the anniversary alongside the Musk issue; available reporting does not establish that it motivated the cartoon series.
  • January 14: Charlie Hebdo promoted its cover, “Elon Musk, l’extrême droite du futur!” AGERPRES reported that the cover depicted Musk emerging from the remains of Jean-Marie Le Pen.
  • January 15: AGERPRES reported that the latest issue went on sale.
  • January 16: The magazine posted the caricatures on X and invited Musk’s feedback.
  • January 17: Cadena SER reported that Musk had not responded at that time. That was the status reported on that date, not a claim about any later response.

What the episode does—and does not—show

The campaign made Charlie Hebdo’s stated free-expression argument concrete: it published unflattering satire of a prominent figure who publicly defends free speech, then placed it on his platform and invited his reaction. The drawings targeted Musk through political and religious imagery as well as crude provocation, and included other public figures in the frame.

That is an account of the magazine’s argument and its actions, not a ruling about X’s rules or a resolution of broader debates over speech and moderation. The contemporaneous reports establish the publication, the invitation and the reported lack of a response as of January 17; they do not establish a platform-policy decision about the series.
