Star Trek: Strange New Worlds brought its Lower Decks crossover forward in 2023: “Those Old Scientists,” season two, episode seven, began streaming on Saturday, July 22, at 4 p.m. PT. It had been scheduled as part of the show’s regular Thursday rollout. The early release was a one-day event announced by StarTrek.com—not a current release notice.

When did the crossover come out early?

StarTrek.com announced on July 22, 2023, that “Those Old Scientists” would stream starting at 4 p.m. PT that day. The episode had been part of Strange New Worlds season two’s Thursday release schedule, so the Saturday availability moved it forward. The announcement’s playful headline was “We’re Boiming up the crossover episode early!” StarTrek.com’s episode preview records the timing and the original announcement.

What happens in “Those Old Scientists”?

While investigating a time portal, Lower Decks ensign Brad Boimler is sent from the 24th century into Captain Christopher Pike’s era. The Enterprise crew has to get him back before his presence changes the timeline. The crossover also brings Lower Decks ensign Beckett Mariner into the story.

How does the crossover work?

The episode combines live action and animation, bringing the animated series’ characters into the live-action world of Strange New Worlds. Tawny Newsome voices Mariner and Jack Quaid voices Boimler; Jonathan Frakes directed the episode. Paramount announced the crossover and its format at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2022, before the episode aired. Paramount’s announcement gives the original details. The episode also received a special animated opening-title sequence, shown in a StarTrek.com video published July 22, 2023.

In its July 22, 2023 preview, StarTrek.com listed Paramount+ for the United States, United Kingdom, Latin America, Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, and Canada. It listed SkyShowtime for the Nordics, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, and Central and Eastern Europe. Those are the territories named in that dated announcement; streaming rights and availability can change, so the list does not establish where the episode is available today.

Can you get the episode on disc?

Yes—as part of the season-two home-media set, rather than as a standalone episode release. StarTrek.com announced DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD editions for December 5, 2023, with “Those Old Scientists” included alongside the rest of season two and more than two hours of special features. The home-media announcement confirms the formats and contents.
