Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary You Can See Everything puts Elizabeth Holmes on camera in the 34 days before she reported to prison, but its trailer raises a question the film itself must answer: does her self-presentation illuminate the Theranos case, or pull attention toward the spectacle of Holmes? The film’s framing is an interpretation, not proof of her motives. The lasting record is more concrete: Theranos promised a blood-testing capability that its technology did not deliver, and Holmes was convicted of investor fraud.
What the documentary is—and what it is not yet possible to say
A24 lists You Can See Everything as a documentary directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, with a U.S. theatrical release scheduled for October 16, 2026. Its synopsis says Holmes invites a skeptical film crew to document her every move 34 days before prison, and describes the project as a three-year journey. VVS Films lists a Canadian theatrical release on the same date and a runtime of 175 minutes; that is the distributor’s listing, not confirmation that the runtime is final in every territory.
The film had screened at Telluride on September 6 and at the New York Film Festival, according to the Associated Press on October 1, 2026. AP reports that filming took place secretly over three years and includes dramatic recreations and elaborations. Viewers therefore should not assume every scene is unmediated observational footage: the finished work combines documentary access with filmmaker construction.
At a New York Film Festival Q&A, Fielder described the process this way, as reported by AP: “As each scene that happens, it’s happening and we’re documenting it. There’s no plan of what’s going to happen next at any point.” That account conveys the filmmakers’ approach; it does not make the resulting film a neutral or complete record of the case.

Why the trailer invites the “new act” reading
ABC News reports that the trailer begins with Fielder asking Holmes, “You really feel you did nothing wrong?” She answers, “I did not.” Asked where things got lost, she says, “I wish I knew. I don’t know. I don’t feel like I understand that.” Near the trailer’s end, she says, “I don’t have anything to hide.” These are selected trailer exchanges, not a complete interview transcript.
ABC also reports Holmes captioned a clip on X, “I’m always being real.” That line makes authenticity part of the documentary’s presentation, but it cannot settle whether the audience should find her sincere. The trailer gives viewers the charged encounter and the claim; it does not establish what Holmes believes or intends.

Fielder told the New York Film Festival audience, in remarks reported by AP: “When I met her, I remember having this weird experience. She seems so genuine at times but then I’m like, (expletive), tracking my thoughts and being like, ‘I know she’s a liar.’” Co-director Lance Oppenheim said, “Every person who worked on this movie was going through a similar cognitive dissonance.” Both statements describe the filmmakers’ experience of making the film. They are not independent findings about Holmes’s inner life.
The Theranos record behind the spectacle
The central story is not whether Holmes can persuade a camera. It is the gap between Theranos’s promise and what the company could substantiate. Holmes founded the medical-testing company with Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani. Theranos promised that a few drops of blood from a finger prick could quickly test for diseases and other health problems; that was a claim, not a validated capability.

In its October 2026 report, the Associated Press says Theranos raised nearly $1 billion from investors and was valued at $4.5 billion by 2014. AP also reports that Wall Street Journal reporting exposed problems with the company’s purported technology advances, after which Theranos collapsed. Those figures are AP’s summary figures, rather than independently checked financial statements here.
The legal record is distinct from Holmes’s own account and the filmmakers’ impressions. ABC reports that Holmes was found guilty in January 2022 on four counts of investor fraud and sentenced to more than 11 years in prison. AP reports she entered a Texas prison in May 2023. A conviction and sentence establish the court outcome; neither a trailer quotation nor a documentary scene changes that outcome.

How to judge whether the film distracts or adds context
The “new act” framing is a useful question to bring to the film, but not a verdict to assume in advance. A documentary can focus on a person’s public performance and still direct attention back to the underlying evidence. The key is whether it gives viewers enough context to distinguish the case’s established facts from Holmes’s claims and from scenes shaped by the filmmakers.
- The court record: what Holmes was convicted of and sentenced for.
- Holmes’s account: statements such as “I did not” and “I don’t have anything to hide,” presented as her own words in the trailer.
- The film’s construction: the documentary footage, dramatic recreations and elaborations, and editorial choices through which Fielder and Oppenheim shape what viewers see.
Those layers should not be collapsed into one another. Fielder’s description of an unfolding process and the filmmakers’ cognitive dissonance may explain the film’s unusual point of view, but neither amounts to a definitive revelation about Theranos or Holmes. Whether the documentary keeps the failed testing claims and investor fraud in focus can only be judged from the finished film, not its provocative trailer.
