The University of Reading released NATURE CENTRIC: To fix our planet, we first of all have to fix ourselves on 5 October 2026. Presented by Professor Tom Oliver and made with BAFTA- and Emmy award-winning Fleeting Year Films, the documentary argues that people are part of nature—not separate from or superior to it—and asks how organisations might put that idea into practice. The University says the film is available to watch on YouTube.
What the film means by “nature-centric”
The film’s starting point is a different way of understanding humanity’s place in the living world. A nature-centric worldview recognises the intrinsic worth of all life and treats people as part of nature, rather than as its masters or outsiders. The University of Reading says the documentary explores what that shift could mean for organisational practice.
Oliver, the film’s presenter and the University’s Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research (Environment), links the conventional alternative to environmental harm: “An anthropocentric worldview, where humans are seen as superior and exceptional to the rest of nature, has wrought ecological destruction on the planet.” He adds: “We are now at a tipping point in remembering our deep interconnection with the natural world.”
Examples of giving nature a voice
The University announcement points to two examples to illustrate how nature-centric thinking might inform decisions. They are examples described by the University, not independently evaluated case studies: the announcement provides no measured ecological outcomes for either.

Lopemede farm near Thame
The announcement describes Lopemede as a farm managed in a way intended to enable nature to flourish. It does not provide outcome measurements or an independent assessment of the farm’s ecological results.
The River Wye and six district councils
According to the University, six district councils give the River Wye a “voice” on their Nutrient Management Board. The announcement does not explain the board’s specific decision-making powers or report measured effects on the river.

Research and projects behind the documentary
The University says the film draws on interdisciplinary research synthesised in Oliver’s 2026 book, The Nature Delusion, and developed further through University-led projects.
Conservation technology risks
In collaboration with the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), the University is assessing the risks of novel species-conservation technologies from a nature-centric perspective. The University’s 2026 announcement gives the project’s value as £1.7 million.

Environmental governance
A second project explores nature-centric approaches to environmental governance. The University gives examples such as granting rights to nature or putting nature on the board of organisations; the announcement does not specify the project’s outcomes.
