Hints for Connections on October 31, 2024

Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared link. These graduated clues move from broad nudges to more revealing descriptions.

  • Yellow: Think of ways to address someone you love.
  • Green: These are actions you can make with your eyelids.
  • Blue: The words name types of fast cars.
  • Purple: Each word can come immediately before “hunt.”

The 16 words in puzzle #508

BAT, EGG, LOVE, WITCH, PUMPKIN, SPIDER, BLINK, JOB, DIABLO, FLUTTER, TREASURE, VIPER, SCAVENGER, MUSTANG, WINK, DARLING.

Yellow: Terms of endearment

DARLING, LOVE, PUMPKIN, TREASURE

“Pumpkin” is an affectionate nickname here, not a signal for a Halloween category.

Green: Things you can do with your eyelids

BAT, BLINK, FLUTTER, WINK

BAT is the tricky fit: as a verb, it can mean to flutter or blink the eyelids.

Blue: Sports cars

DIABLO, MUSTANG, SPIDER, VIPER

Purple: ___ HUNT

EGG, JOB, SCAVENGER, WITCH

Each completes a familiar phrase: egg hunt, job hunt, scavenger hunt, and witch hunt.

Why the Halloween words can mislead

The grid includes several words associated with Halloween, including BAT, WITCH, SPIDER, and PUMPKIN. They do not form a Halloween group in this puzzle: BAT belongs with eyelid actions, WITCH joins the “___ hunt” phrases, SPIDER is a sports-car name, and PUMPKIN is a term of endearment.
